Wearable Sculpture

My wearable sculpture is a hat/headband that is made out of yarn, hockey socks, hockey skate laces and mini pom poms. I wanted to make a hat out of hockey materials, so I chose to use the ones that I have mentioned. in this sculpture there are many pom poms that I made out of yarn and skate laces. The part that goes around my head is part of a hockey sock and the top part that the pom poms are on is also made out of hockey sock that is wrapped around a piece of cardboard. I used elements of art such as space and texture. There is negative space in which you can see right through the sculpture as well as the head of the person who wears it. The pom poms add a unique and interesting texture.

In this work of art I used composition techniques such as grouping. By grouping the pom poms close together, the top of the hat looks really cool and interesting, especially due to the pattern and diversity of color. My projects started completely different than what it turned out to be. At first I was going to make some sort of pom pom hat (hence the pom poms) but I realized it was too simple, and I wanted to make something more exciting. After thinking a lot about it, I settled on this idea— a headband with a mohawk sort of thing on top.

I chose the pom pom hat theme along with the hockey materials because many hockey players I know, as well as myself, wear pom pom hats. It is a part of the culture. Also, the flowing yarn at the base of the hat is supposed to symbolize the flow, which is a common hockey hair style. If I had to start over, I might find a way to better attach the cardboard piece to the headband part because it could be a little more sturdy. Other than that, I am really happy with my final product. The biggest challenge was just coming up with the idea because I had no clear cut image in my mind. Despite this, I am proud of the form of it and how it is so eye catching. My strengths as an artist are conveyed in how I was able to use mostly only hockey materials to do this project and my weaknesses can be seen in my time management because I struggled to get it done, although I did in the end.
