Hand Project

This is my hand project. I decided to do two hands on jail bars, grasping them. I had to make pure hands with the style of pure contour only, meaning that there couldn't be any fine details such as minor lines, veins etc. I could do zentangles in it though, as it was a requirement in the project. I did these zentangles on the middle two jail bars and one of the hands. I also had to base the hands off of my own hands, I couldn't use a picture from online. I could use any material, but I chose to use just graphite and pen.

I started this project by choosing a medium sized piece of drawing paper. After this I drew a half-inch border and started drawing. I drew the jail poles in first and tried to make them an equal distance apart. Then I drew hands in, but these ones didn't wrap all the way around the poles. I didn't like this so I had to erase the hands and draw in new ones that grasped the poles completely (shown above.) After this I began to draw in the zentangles. I did the left middle pole first and the right middle pole second. Then I did the hand on the left. All of these zentangles were only sketched in with graphite, so I to go over them with sharpie pen. Following this I shaded in the background of the jail with graphite lightly at first, and darker later. Then I erased the parts in the middle to create the = sign. Finally, I went over all the important lines that I wanted to stand out with sharpie. After this, I was finished.

I came up with this idea after thinking about issues in our world today. I thought of this in a sense of equality. I drew a black hand and a white hand with an equals sign between them, but it is all behind the bars of a jail cell, because we haven't truly reached equality yet today. Overall I am very happy with my final product. I might have done a neater job of the shading in the background of the jail cell, but I think it is pretty good. I really like the effect of the zentangles and I feel like I got the message across that I was trying to.
