Scratchboard

This project was yet another where we became familiar with value, except this time we incorporated line. Plus, to put a spin on it we had to add more line to make areas lighter instead of darker. For this project we picked a photo to recreate on scratchboard that showed value.

For my photo I chose a picture of the Maine State House in Augusta of the rotunda. I had recently been there and thought that it was a compelling image. (Plus, fun story, I spent 20+ minutes talking to my Representative, Paul Chase, about whether or not conversion therapy should be illegal in Maine for minors. I gave him statistics and a compelling, well put together argument, and that bitch still voted that it should remain legal. So something positive may as well come out of that trip, and in this case something positive is a super cool art piece.) Anyways. I then used a scratchy tool to pull away the layer of dried ink, to create value.

This project was fun, but I made quite a few mistakes. For one, I jumped right into it, and you can see on the biggest white band that I was sort of just aggressively scraping at the board with ZERO technique. Which would have been fine if not for my technique of using very careful parallel lines that I used for the rest of the project. I assume I'm the only one who notices this. Secondly, I forgot that there was a railing on a part of the rotunda, but it was too late to go back because you can't really erase on scratchboard. Oh well. Despite all of these mistakes, the final product is something I'm very proud of.
