COVID 19 Response

I created this piece as a submission for Artsonia's "Students Respond to Coronavirus" project. The image depicts two symmetrical houses with silhouettes of people waving at each other from both of the windows. The light from their windows overlap in between the two houses, where text says "Stay Safe - Stay Connected." I wanted to focus on how important it is to somehow feel connection to other people in this time, even if it's imperfect communication.

I wanted to have a very symmetrical composition since I usually make all of my work very scattered and layered. I figured that in most of my work I use very messy materials, making a very measured piece would be difficult to do without losing some of the color or light (I felt like I would end up with a lot of line work with very little other substance). Photoshop has a lot of tools to make it easy to have symmetry, and I hadn't yet taken advantage of it as an artistic resource. In terms of color, I stuck with my theme of contrast in my sustained investigations, since I think it did a good job of keeping my touch on it when I made something so different from what I usually do.

I think that it terms of basic graphic design, this project it well composed, but I find my execution of it dissatisfying. I think there are a lot of things that I would change. Despite it looking sketchy, I like the outlining on the houses because I don't like perfect clean cut shapes in everything I do, so I wish I had somehow worked that into the rest of the image. I struggled a lot with how simple I wanted this to be, and I settled on making it simple since I always like to add embellishments to my art and it would be interesting to challenge myself. I think, however, that I should have somehow given the space between the two houses.
