This project was to teach us about the printmaking process. We used a photo we had and reduced it to positive and negative space, and used those elements to create an interesting print. We used a block, carving tools, and ink to create a set of 4 prints.
I chose to use a photo of a sculpture that I saw at the Boston MFA. It was of a woman holding a book and looking up. It was between this and a photo of a bunch of gals climbing up a rock, and this picture was actually much better, but I didn't want to explain to my classmates during critique why I carved a bunch of naked sirens for my print. Oh well. My carving process was straightforward, I edited the photo in acorn to be a black and white colorized image, and then transferred it onto the block, and cut out the white space (and only cut myself ONCE). My printing process was a little bit more difficult. I would either use too much or too little ink, and the amount of failed prints I have in a stack are beyond countable. And DO NOT get me started on how hard it is to print onto magazine paper (-10/10 experience).
This project was actually quite fun and successful overall. The process had a few errors, most of which I could just ask for help with. The one thing I wish I had was a better photo since the original was kind of blurry and even after editing was low-quality.
