COVID 19 Response #2

This was my second project meant for submission to Artsonia's "Students Respond to COVID-19" online student art gallery. One of Artsonia's suggestions for pieces you could submit is a thank you to doctors and nurses, and I considered this for a moment, and then thought about how doctors and nurses (although essential and amazing and should be thanked) are not the only workers risking their health to provide essential services during this crisis. I represented the need for wider thank-yous by making an illustration of a grocery bag with the message "Thank All Essential Workers". I completed this illustration on photoshop because it makes adding effective text-work easy, and it makes messing with color schemes a little easier.

I tried to make this project have a very soft appearance in terms of colors, line, and general composition. I stuck to using very warm colors in the drawing, and to unify the piece I added a layer of just yellow over the whole piece and then changed the settings on the layer to 'linear burn' which unifies the color scheme even more. I kept everything very centered in this project, the lettering and the bulk of the illustration. It brings your eyes to the center of the piece. I also made sure that within the grocery bag was only essential foods.

I personally think that this piece is much stronger than my previous COVID response. I think the general aesthetic content and the message are more telling of my feelings on the issues at hand in terms of the art that I want to make in this context. I think that my use of text and font was more effective as it was more simple and straightforward than my last piece. I also just think my skill in photoshop has improved slightly which gives me a little bit more edge. If I were to change this piece I think I could maybe make the text into one of those grocery bag "thank you" messages, which might be an interesting incorporation.
