This project was my second work within my concentration of anatomy. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do at first, but I decided just making little organs out of sculpey was a good place to start since I could take them in a lot of directions. I started by picking colors for the heart, then made sketches to make sure I knew how I was going to make the parts to piece it together. I looked at diagrams of human hearts from the front and from the back, made a foil base, then got to work. The veins were the hardest part to put together because they overlap and intertwine with one another, so I had to make sure they didn't squish each other. Next, I did a brain, mostly because of the head vs. heart duality. I made a foil base, covered it in light sculpey, and then rolled a long strip of the same color and layered it on top like a sort of ramen pattern. After this I didn't have a direction to go in so I started working on other projects to get ahead. A couple of classes later, my friend came to visit me while I was making little paper eyes for them in a spur of the moment choice to make them into little characters, and she suggested that I give them googly eyes. Coincidentally, my art teacher had a bag of googly eyes and I glued them on. I then went about making legs for them so that they could be arranged in a little scene or a platform. The legs were made out of wire and then secured to a platform with a thinner gauge wire. The heart wouldn't stand correctly (it was very wobbly) so the wires were bent to make little knees so that she could be sitting.
This project fits in with the message of the last work in my concentration ("Anatomy is subjective...") since they were modeled very delicately after accurate diagrams, and then given a more humorous touch. I feel much happier with this project because even though it may not be big or complex it has a softer more funny energy to it (the eyes and little legs give the sculpture personality). If I did this again I would have made more sculpey characters so that there could be a bigger scene.
