My second submission for my sustained investigation of comedy and seriousness is a continuation of my climate change zine. I have completed three more images, all done in India ink. The first depicts a scene of a flooded forest landscape, and centerfold there is a house which is half submerged under the water. The second image is sketched illustrations of “school supplies”, one of the items being a particle mask. The third image is a surreal landscape where an industrial scene and a forest setting are mashed together on the page.
The inspiration for these images varies from thought to experience. My inspiration for the first illustration was based on a memory I have of always thinking that since I lived on a hill, if there was ever a flood I would be safe from danger, and I could even go fishing and swimming outside of my door (so what would even be so bad about a flood?). I continued my use of complementary colors in the representation of more surreal and dramatic scenes, yet again using green and red. The second image is based on experience again, of having to wear a particle mask to school since the Sonoma fires were only a county away, and all of the smoke was drifting through town. Since this was a more grounded, less outstanding illustration I stuck with more realistic and reasonable color schemes. My final image was a surreal scene of a factory and a forest having to coexist on the same page. The tree in the foreground is ablaze and the factory seems to be in working order. This color scheme is bold, but not complementary, which was meant to go with the dreamlike feeling of the image (multiple suns and a face within the tree).
My current concern for continuing my zine is making better use of composition and eliminating the intense amount of negative space that I’ve used thus far. I’m currently very happy with my progress otherwise, I feel I’m creating fairly strong images with the timeline I’ve set for myself.
