Sustained Investigation #10

My idea going into this project was to experiment with materials more than I have done so in the semester already. The theme for this project was mental illness, but I did not move into it enough to get the message across. My intention for this project was to juxtapose the soft materials and craft art of embroidery with the serious issue of mental illness. I used cotton cloth, embroidery, and linocut to complete this bit of progress. The book was arranged as an accordion book rather than a sine for spine.

I used color and and composition in this project, with simple symmetrical arrangement and very muted colors (in contrast to my much brighter colors in the climate change zine).

This project did not turn out how I intended. While I liked the way the embroidery looks, and I like the idea of printing on cloth, the pages were stitched together wrong, so it’s hard to fold the book back together. I have decided to pause this zine for the time being and try to make a cloth book another time.
