The final project for this class was to fill out 20 circles on a sheet in a creative way that demonstrates everything that we have learned this semester. I chose to fill out the circles in a continuous picture that had a story book vibe, and I wanted it to address all of the things that I wrote about wanting to improve in my reflection. This meant that I wanted to improve on the background be engaging and not just a color wash. I made some of the circles into windows, and then I turned one of them into the moon. I made the rest be a sneak of a girl sitting on her roof over a mountain town.
I used watercolors and charcoal to make this piece. First I layered on the watercolors to the value a I wanted (I didn’t want dark ones but I didn’t want it to look washed out). After that I added detail to the mountains, the moon’s face, and the house. I wanted the piece to have unifying colors, so I went for blue tones and then red and yellowish warm tones.
I’m very proud of this piece. I always get annoyed that my art has an interesting center but then a bland background. For once, I wouldn’t change a lot about this piece. If I had a few less midterms to study for I would have added something around the circles to make it look more like a storybook. I also would have liked to spend a little more time on the girl, but her simplicity goes well with the quiet atmosphere of the rest of it.
