Independent Project

This was the project that we got to design ourselves. For mine, I chose to create a set of drawings and one painting, using line and color to create characters that were interesting and portrayed a personality through pose and facial expression. I used ink pens and markers for the drawings, and acrylic paint and paint markers for the painting.

The drawings were done by looking at pose references online, and working off of those to create a whole new person. They were outlined in pen, and then lines were added to create value and texture on clothing. After that I went in with marker, and a blocks of color were added (either to enhance shading or to color in a part of the person). For the painting, I sketched out a rough model and then moved forward from there. I painted her face with sunset colors, and tried to make it look like the light was shining on her from the right side of her face. After that I painted a gradient background. I was very lucky that my art teacher had paint pens, which allowed me to outline the painting, which connected the series. The painting became the most visually appealing of the set, and a sort of focal point for it.

This project went really smoothly, especially considering I had already drawn two of the pieces in the set. I did do quite a few other drawings that were originally going to be in the final collection, but they just didn't make the cut. The painting was sort of out of the blue. I had wanted to do a painting before I started this project, but changed my mind. I still wanted to do it though, and since we got to make the rules for this project, I made it. I used the elements of line and color very effectively and they resulted in some of my best work this year.
