Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was an artist associated with the surrealist movement (but she fits into other movements as well). Her art displayed very dark or sad themes (sometimes/often with feminist undertones), with the focus being herself (lots of self portraits).

Her work was known and is still known to be a feminist painter and worked a lot with symbolism. Many of her paintings depict her in various religious scenes (herself as the virgin Mary, or at the Last Supper). Female painters before her, especially when they tried to express emotion in the same sense that Kahlo did, were painted as crazy. She remains a huge influence in most contemporary female artists.

After the bus accident in which she suffered serious harm in 1925, she was bedridden for a few years. When she was able to walk again she became involved in the Cachuchas group and the Mexican Communist Party. Her artwork created during this time was influenced by the surrealist movement and artists like Diego Rivera (who was also her husband). As I stated before her art took a large role in encouraging the feminist movement, as well as surrealism, and other artists.

The artist connects to my own life and others living in the modern day. Personally, I see her as both a feminist and artistic idol or role model (as I’m sure many other young female artists do). Her art is still admired for being empowering and meaningful to the feminist movement."

This was my research for the gridded self portrait that we did. I cant really analyze it using elements and principles, but I will talk about it a little bit.

This artist was a really easy pick for me. I have a sort of weird obsession with Frida Kahlo, and I have a large collections of random facts about her life. Not to mention my Frida pin that I wear religiously. She is a huge inspiration to me, both artistically and just in general. She was a Mexican woman working in a male dominated career, and she was great at expressing her emotions through art, and she was also bi (love me some history queers).

Anyways, I don't know how to analyze this, but I want credit since it was on the list.
