The old centre of Brighton, called The Lanes, is a maze of tiny little cobbled streets and alleyways, full of a wide variety of small boutiques, shops and cafes by day and with a lot of bars, pubs & restaurants by night.
The Lanes is south of the main road (between North Street and the sea), whereas the North Laines shopping area is north of the main road, the other side of the Royal Pavilion, had has more regular streets but even more quirky shops. Don't miss out in seeing both!
By day, you'll find lots of very elegant boutique shops, selling high end fashion, toiletries, footwear, home wares, etc, as well as a many of jewellery stores and antique shops. There are lots of lovely cafes & restaurants for lunch and coffee and by night some of Brighton's best restaurants and bars can be found, some of which date back to the 15th century, when the Lanes were part of the original fishing village of Brighthelmstone, which later developed and became known as Brighton.
