The Dome is housed in a grand, historic building, just beside the Royal Pavilion and was actually the Prince Regent's stables. It held 44 horses in a circular stable arrangement with space for the groomsmen on the balcony level above. The central cupola is 80 feet (24 m) in diameter and 65 feet (20 m) in height, with a vast glass dome covering the room, which latterly gave the building its name. It was a very ambitious piece of construction at the time and many people thought the glass roof would fall in once the scaffolding was removed. In the centre of the circular auditorium was a large lotus-shaped fountain which was used to water the horses. The stables were built in an Indo-Saracenic style around 1806 to 1808.
The Dome is set in the lovely tree lined Pavilion Gardens just beside the Royal Pavilion and the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, and just at the start of the North Laines. A great place to sit out, relax, enjoy the cafe in the gardens and listen to the buskers, before continuing your exploration of the city centre.
