The old royal palace of King George IV, the Royal Pavilion is now a stately home museum, with an exterior like the Taj Mahal and an interior that surprises, mixing Regency grandeur with a Chinese Mandarin's oriental palace. We thoroughly recommend a visit, it really is surprisingly good! You'll see the fantastic ballroom, the grand banqueting hall with it's dragons and palm leaves on the ceiling, the palace kitchens where elaborate 50 course dinners were prepared under golden palm trees for hundreds of royal guests, the music room and the royal bedrooms, all brought to life with a complementary audio guide, explaining the history and telling some interesting tales from the Pavilion.
Events and exhibitions throughout the year, including at Christmas you can go ice skating in the Pavilion gardens, listen to carols and sometimes even attend a black tie dinner banquet at the Pavilion.
There's a lovely tea shop inside the Pavilion and then enjoy the lovely Pavilion Gardens set out around the palace, with the ornamental gate house, a lovely cafe and often buskers playing music. A great place to sit out and relax, before moving onto the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and Brighton Dome, directly next door.
