Breakout Rooms allow users to split their meetings into up to 50 separate sessions. The host can split the participants of the meeting into separate sessions automatically or manually. They can also allow participants to select and enter the Breakout Rooms on their own. The host is able to switch between the Breakout Rooms at any time.
Start an instant or scheduled meeting.
In the meeting controls, Click the Breakout Rooms button.
Select the number of rooms you would like to create and how you would like to assign your participants to those rooms:
Assign automatically: Let Zoom split your participants up evenly into each of the rooms.
Assign manually: After creating the rooms, you can assign which participants you would like in each room.
Let participants choose room: After creating the rooms, participants can select and enter rooms on their own.
Click Create. At this point, the rooms will be created but not Opened.
Zoom will now display a list of the Breakout Rooms. If you chose Assign Manually as the assignment method, now is your opportunity to add Participants to each of the Breakout Rooms. Additionally, you also have the ability to move Participants to any of the Breakout Rooms using the Move To link that appears when hovering over their name.
Note: If students are reporting that they are not receiving the automatic Breakout Room assignments, they will need to be manually added to rooms during this step. They will appear at the top of the list of Breakout Rooms with an Assign button to the right of their name.
Here you will also have the option to Rename, Delete or Join any of the Breakout Rooms.
Click the Open All Rooms button to start the breakout rooms.
Note: Once the breakout rooms have been started, the assigned participants will be asked to join the Breakout Session. The host or co-host that launched the breakouts and the original host will stay in the main meeting until joining a room manually.
The following options will be available to you while the Breakout Rooms are in progress:
Join: Join the breakout room.
Leave: Leave the room and return to the main meeting (only shows when in a breakout room).
Delete Room: Delete the already in-progress Breakout Room.
Note: The option to delete a breakout room is only available if the breakout rooms have not been opened or if already opened, the room has no participants currently in the room.
Broadcast: (Host and co-hosts) Abilities to send a message or broadcast mic audio to all breakout rooms.
Add Room: Create an additional breakout room.
Close All Rooms: Stops all rooms after a 60-second countdown, which is shown to the host, co-hosts, and participants, and returns all participants back to the main meeting.
Upon hovering over a participant's name, each participant will have the following options available:
Assign To: Only available for unassigned participants. Allows the host or co-host to assign the participant to a room.
Move To: Click to move a participant to another available breakout room. All breakouts will be listed, each with its current number of participants.
Sign into the Zoom Web Portal.
Click on the Meetings option from the menu on the left.
Click on the name of your meeting.
Select the Polls/Quizzes tab and then Create to add poll questions.
Note: Creating Breakout Rooms from poll results only works for single-choice poll questions.
From the same window where you add poll questions, toggle to enable Create Breakout Rooms to create breakout rooms in meetings based on participant answers for a particular question.
Note: This feature will not work if Require answers to be anonymous check box is selected. If your poll has multiple questions, you must toggle to enable Create Breakout Rooms for the specific question you wish to base the creation of the breakout room from.
Click Save.
While in the meeting, launch the poll for students to respond to.
Click End Poll when the students have finished voting.
In the Poll/Quizzes results window, click Create Breakout Rooms for the question you wish to use for creating the breakout rooms.
(Optional) You can choose how many participants you want in each breakout room in the Create Breakout Rooms window.
Click Create.
(Optional) Participants can be moved around manually after you create the rooms by hovering over their names and clicking Move to or Exchange.
Click Open All Rooms.
