Purdue University Global promotes the use of faculty-created videos to supplement classroom content and foster student engagement. Kaltura is the video creation tool implemented at the University. The use of this tool is optional for faculty. Kaltura is accessible through the Brightspace LMS and provides a wealth of options for faculty to create video content for announcements, feedback, and more.
Video content should add value to the student learning and should map to the courses/unit outcomes.
Videos should not increase student workload for the week.
Videos should be brief (under 5 minutes).
In most cases, being brief is best. There may be other times when something more lengthy is of value in a particular course, but generally, 5 minutes should be the suggested maximum length.
Videos should refrain from specific language that could change or become obsolete - both content-wise and for PG and should be labeled in a way that does not refer to specific units, courses, or textbooks so that it may be used in different units should content change as a result of a course revision.
Permission to include items such as proprietary imagery inserted into videos must be documented in accordance with federal copyright laws. The authorship of content gleaned from outside sources should be appropriately acknowledged.
If you are using PowerPoint in your video, check the presentation for accessibility compliance. File > Check for Issues > Check Accessibility.
It is recommended that you close all other programs on your computer before recording a video in Kaltura to prevent issues with audio/video lag or delay.
