COMMUNITY PROFILE
Background of the Community
Sta. Cruz Elementary School is an elementary school learning center in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Antipolo City which provides basic primary education to pupils from kindergarten up to Grade 6. Currently, it is the third biggest elementary school in the Division of Antipolo City, thus, is also considered a center for learning and an essential institution for the residents of Antipolo City. Located beside Sta. Cruz Elementary School is Antipolo National High School (ANHS) which also provides basic education to high school students. Most pupils from Sta. Cruz Elementary School studied in ANHS after graduating. The school’s community mainly uses the Filipino language for their communication and English as their learning language.
Aligned with the mission and vision of the Department of Education (DepEd), Sta. Cruz Elementary School aims to promote and provide the right of every Filipino to complete basic education where learning should be of utmost importance without worrying about the environment students are studying in. School teachers and staff must nurture the students into becoming good at studies whilst also being good citizens. Additionally, the school has the responsibility of bringing out the full potential of the students and making them contribute to the betterment of our nation. The school imposes 4 core values the students must possess: Maka-Diyos, Maka-tao, Makakalikasan, at Makabansa.
Sta. Cruz Elementary School was established on January 01, 1982. It was previously known as Bagong Nayon III Elementary School before it became Sta. Cruz Elementary School. Former principal Dr. Ricardo I. De Guzman spearheaded the process of renaming the school. Thankfully, it was approved by the City Council headed by Honorable Angelito C. Gatlabayan, the mayor of Antipolo City, last December 19, 2000. The current name of the school was first used during the School Year 2001-2002.
According to a former student in the class (V. Vega, personal communication, October 7, 2021), the pre-pandemic setup of Sta. Cruz Elementary School was purely offline. The classes were divided into two shifts, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The morning classes start at around 6:00 a.m. and end at around 11:30 a.m. while those in the afternoon start at around 12:30 p.m. and end at around 6:00 p.m.
The current setup of the school is the same as every other school in the Philippines: a mix of online and offline (modular) learning. In our target grade level, 5th grade, there are 6 sections that conduct online classes, and the rest conduct modular learning.
Sta. Cruz Elementary School is located at Olalia Drive National Road Brgy. Sta Cruz, Antipolo City

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the project are to teach Mathematics to the students as preparation for the National Competitive Examination (NCE) and other high school entrance exams, to inform the school about Philippine Science High School and the National Competitive Examination (NCE) and encourage them to apply, and to emphasize the importance of Science & Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Courses and encourage them to take it in the future. The major deliverables of the education project include creating lesson plans and presentations for each subject, practice exercises and examination dry runs, pre-tests, main implementation (tutoring), post-tests and surveys, post-implementation analysis, and documentation & reflection.
For SAGIP, it is important for us to share our knowledge with the younger generation with limited access to tutorials and review centers for National Competitive Examination (NCE) because we believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to attain a higher and more advanced education for a bright and fruitful future regardless of socioeconomic background. In general, the average elementary school student is not aware of the benefits of becoming a PSHS scholar, and we would like to inform them of such.
White (2014) mentions STEM education’s qualities in giving its students a toolbox in critical thinking skills that give them significant advantages whether or not they choose to pursue post-secondary education. Rappler (2014) news presents the facts regarding Philippine Science High School, including the school’s vision, which is aligned with the vision of this project: for the younger generation to experience quality education in sciences and math regardless of socioeconomic status. The website for the Philippine Science High School system (n.d.) provides information on the following: perks of being a scholar, notable alumni, monthly allowance rates, and guidelines on application to be a PSHS scholar. Part of being a scholar is an education that competes with the rest of the world, an immersion program designed to accustom students to real-world work in science and technology, and a non-stem program that rounds off students and complements the STEM curriculum.
Like other initiatives that aim to provide quality and accessible education to various audiences, our project also aims to provide education to those who are in need of it and/or to those who are willing to learn but do not have enough access to the education or knowledge they need. Our project will extend the reach of these initiatives by including our target community to those who are benefitting from the said initiatives/projects. Also, our project also has a side goal of promoting STEM education and career paths to students, which is an essential step to future scientific and technological advancement.
IMPLEMENTATION
Expert Collaboration/Consultation:
Our group, SAGIP, consulted with a Math teacher in Sta. Cruz Elementary School, which also happened to be our gatekeeper, Mrs. Ana Liza C. Estrada.
We asked her to review the lesson plan we made and the presentations before we presented them to the participants.
RESULTS
To assess the effectivity of the project, student aptitudes for math before and after the sessions was assessed by the creation of a pre-test and post-test.
4 of the 30 students answered the pre-test
5 of the 30 students answered the post-test
3-6 students attended the sessions.
Of the 3 people that answered both the pre- and post-tests, comparing the scores showed two had their scores improve by 5 and 6 points respectively though one participant had a lower score by one point.
Looking at the data below, we can see that the average score for the post-test (15.6 points) is much higher than the average score for the pre-test (11.75). However, we can not use this as a basis for success since the number of test-takers is inconsistent. What we did was we collected all of the scores from the students who took both pre-test and post-test. The average score for the pre-test is now 12 points, while the average score for the post-test is 15.33 points. The average score went up by 3.33 points. With this, we can still say that the tutoring program was a success.
Pre-test Result
Post-test Result
There were two new participants who answered the post-test and results show generally higher scores. Which meet our success requirement of getting more students to participate and score higher in tests. Unfortunately, one participant who took the pre-test did not take the post-test and another scored lower in it.
The math tutoring program by our group helped the students review for the Math section in the NCE. Our goal is to help students get into Pisay by having tutoring sessions (without spending money for review centers and such) because we believe that every student deserves a quality education regardless of socioeconomic status.
Lack of students in attendance
Not enough time for one lesson
Small discrepancy in those who answered pre- and post-test
Enticements organized with gatekeeper
Later lessons were adjusted to fit this lesson in mind
We used those who answered both as our dataset
SUSTAINABILITY
Higher chance of passing the NCE
Higher scores in Mathematics
Additional knowledge on certain subjects
Contribution to the field of Science in the future
Increase awareness in PSHS and STEM
Increase in confidence in taking up STEM courses
Giving of deliverables to lower batches who want to pursue a similar project.
Conclusion & Recommendation
This project's implementation was to give elementary students a better understanding of one of their options of pursuing a higher education in a science high school (SHS) such as, in particular, Philippine Science High School (PSHS). There's a lack of information and awareness regarding SHSs among elementary students. Some students did not have the opportunity to study in PSHS because they were not aware of it. In addition, the project promotes the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) strand. STEM is a growing branch of specialties that has a wide array of career opportunities. It has a large impact in society because as the world's technologies keep on improving, there continues to be a bigger demand for specialists in STEM.
The problems encountered during the project included: time constraints and a lack of student participation. The former was a fault of mismanaged time wherein we fell off the planned timeline and had to compromise on the plan and activities that followed after. The latter could be seen when only a small portion of the group would attend meetings or answer our diagnostic tests. Besides that, mistakes happened in the meetings which could often be time wasted.
Thus, our recommendation for the future is to better plan ahead the project, with better care in time allotments for communications and practice lessons alongside further reminders of the set deadlines. Student participation should be incentivized to increase the participants. There's a strong emphasis in the need for practice since that could prevent a lot of mistakes in the actual sessions. In the case of actual mistakes, better attention needs to be paid in order to prevent it from happening again. Possible procedures to add would be to: make use of feedback forms so the students can assess our program and how much it has helped them and possible call to a formal face-to-face invitation if the logistics allow so. The latter can especially help a class participation.
