When the project was finished, most of the students who attended the tutorials sent an email or message thanking us for making the lessons easier to understand. They said that they feel more comfortable with us teaching them compared to their teachers which they fear sometimes. With those feedback coming from them, we feel that we were able to achieve our objectives of giving an easier-to-understand lesson for them and to provide a quality tutorial session and learning guides.
The project was able to help not only the students, but also the teachers by lessening the workload and making their class more active due to students sharing what they learned from our tutorials during their class.
It didn't go that smoothly at first. We encountered some problems regarding the video-conferencing application that we used. During the first meeting we used Google Classroom using our Pisay email but we noticed that we didn't have access to a video recording function so we decided to just record the meeting using a screen recorder; after that we asked the students if we could switch to Zoom on the next meeting and everyone agreed. Since then, we didn't have any problems regarding the tutorials.
Through the tutorials, we were able to see how difficult it is to be a teacher, especially during an online class setup where many variables can affect the learning and morale of a student. According to a study by Hernik and Jaworska (2018), there is a positive correlation between enjoyment of a subject and a student’s understanding of it.
We are confident that we were able to make the class much more enjoyable for the students while still bringing a quality teaching and learning guides for them. When it comes to doing tutorials, do not be afraid to ask question to your mentors and your contact person to know what you can improve with your work.
We recommend to find another option for a video conferencing application aside from Zoom and Gmeet that has a video recording function if you are willing to recreate this project through an online set-up, but it would be better if the group can teach them face-to-face to have a better interaction with them. If ever a group would want to continue our project in teaching students from NFES, It is recommended that they also teach Grade 5 students and include the subjects English and Science alongside Mathematics to better prepare them for Highschool, but this would be better done as a class divided in a group with a subject assigned for each of them.
