Who are they?
Project Lingkod is an initiative led by students of Philippine Science High School-Main Campus aimed to instill a sense of nationhood and civic engagement within its target community, the fifth-graders of Gideon Academy. It is composed of three 40-minute synchronous sessions spanning three weeks that covered different topics designed to provide an overview of opportunities to serve in the midst of the pandemic.
Project Lingkod was created by Olsen Velasco, Raven Foronda, Jopeth Seda, Julian Duran, and Francine Tapalla to provide educational materials designed to increase community awareness and civic engagement. The project was implemented in partnership with the Gideon Academy, mainly through Dr. Kathereen Fonte, the elementary supervisor. The collaboration was implemented over a span of three weeks, with an even longer preparation and consultation period. Many activities addressed the specific needs of the Gideon Academy students, and laid out the foundation for future civic involvement. These activities include a storytelling video on a Filipino Epic, a tutorial on online graphic design as a marketing skill, and a webinar on civic engagement given by the project supervisor, Ma’am Cecilia Bartolay. Project Lingkod was successfully concluded on March 17, 2022.
"Project Lingkod is committed to the creation of quality and creative learning materials and educational content in relation to the needs of students across the Philippines."
The team desires to leave a positive and memorable impact on the students and the community of Gideon Academy as partners in education and civic involvement.
If the project were to be continued in the future, even in the case of collaboration with other communities, the team hopes that the successors of Project Lingkod will continue to provide for the specific needs of learners in creative and engaging media.
Gideon Academy is a Christian and educational institution offering preschool, primary, intermediate, and secondary education, located at 2683 F.B. Harrison Street, Pasay City, Metro Manila. The institution’s demographic is mainly composed of students of Chinese-Filipino descent with some pure Chinese students coming from abroad during their pre-pandemic school years. In addition, there are students who are based in other countries but still attend online synchronous classes implemented by the faculty of Gideon.Â
The project was directed with the partnership of Dr. Kathereen Fonte, the elementary supervisor of Gideon Academy and the main person of contact for the project's implementation.
