With Gentle Hand's focus on teaching skills such as reading and writing, there has been a lack of scientific education in the community for its children. The project addresses this gap through the demonstration and explanation videos produced. Despite the setbacks, we were able to gather the materials and produce the videos for these kids to experience science in a way they never had before.
Overall, we believe that our project has been successful, but it is not perfect. If we were to continue this project, or if others wish to replicate what we have done, there are a couple of things that we would change. Firstly, it is definitely much better to implement this project in a face-to-face manner. Coordinating with the facilitators would definitely be more efficient in a physical meeting and interacting with the participants would make this project more hands-on and effective. However, it was definitely much better that we did not force a meeting with the community due to the circumstances and we definitely recommend that future community projects prioritize sensitivity and empathy with the issues that their community is facing. Secondly, we recommend that future replications of this project expand the lesson coverage taught to the participants. Consultations with science teachers may help design the lesson plan and pinpoint what fundamental lessons should be taught to your participants. Lastly, since we were not able to do so due to time constraints, we recommend future projects finish their learning materials soon enough so that the community facilitators and the teachers can review and approve the content.
When the group brainstormed the project, we thought of conducting a quiz bee to incentivize the participants to listen to the lessons and participate in the activities. However, to simplify this project, we decided to implement this more casually in the form of the balloon-powered car race. For future projects, this could definitely be incorporated into the project in a much better way to encourage all the children to be involved in the project. Since one of the strengths of this project is its cost-effectiveness due to its use of recycled materials, we suggest future replications to implement this on a greater scale through recycling programs to collect materials that can be used for the experiments. This keeps the low-cost characteristic of this project and promotes environmental awareness.
