Our Community: The PSHS-MC IS Unit
In charge of teaching the Integrated Science and Earth Science subjects to Grade 7-8 students of PSHS-MC
Founded in 2017. It aims to teach students the natural sciences, show how they are connected, and enhance their science skills.
Located within Room 103B of the campusās Science and Humanities Building. However, due to the pandemic, they have taken to online learning platforms like KHub and Google services.
Our Goal
We aim to create videos that will help Earth Science students understand. We chose to do this because Earth Science is a difficult topic for many.

In general, the IS Unit can be contacted via gmail. Their working hours are on weekdays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The community is accessible via their email, integratedscience@pshs.edu.ph or is.mc@pshs.edu.ph.
Objectives of the Community Project
Many Grade 7 and 8 students Ā have found Earth Science to be difficult, as it often involves heavy use of mathematics, critical thinking, application of knowledge, and unfamiliar concepts to most. This project is designed to help in teaching Earth Science topics that Grade 8 students of Philippine Science High School - Main Campus often find difficult in order for them to better understand said topics.Ā
Teachers often use videos to teach science in tandem with practical applications of the topic being learned in order to help students better understand concepts. Videos provide a means for students to better understand via video-graphic features such as real-life examples and explanations of scientific concepts, which students have stated helped them understand as they may become emotionally engaged with the video (Higgins et al, 2018). Many science videos can be found on the website YouTube, which can be easily accessed by people around the world. These videos act as a source of information for both science communication and education, often using creative means to explain a topic.Ā
Similarly, this project used videos as a tool to help students understand Earth Science topics, and hopes that it will inspire other video creators to use their skills and forms of media to create learning materials for students in other subjects. In addition, it could be used as a learning resource that teachers can use to help students understand more complex topics in Earth Science.Ā
Objectives of the Community Project
In the short term, We hope that the videos created will help current Earth Science students in Philippine Science High School Main Campus better learn concepts in Earth Science by providing explanations and examples on Earth Science topics, such as sedimentary rocks, earthquakes, and relative dating. In the long term, we hope that our videos will also be helpful, not only to students and teachers from other schools and campuses, but also to anyone who wishes to have a deeper understanding of Earth Science.
Success Indicators
1. If three videos were created and uploaded onto YouTube
2. The Earth Science teachers were able to give it positive feedback (via exit interview)
3. If the videos helped the students (based on survey)

Behind the ScenesĀ
Evaluation
A total of 11 students evaluated the videos that were created by the project, rating each video's animation, clarity, length, relevance, and quality on a scale of 1-5, along with their overall satisfaction, and comments and suggestions on how to improve the videos.
Earthquakes
Animation 4.45
Clarity 4.91
Length 4.55
Relevance 4.64
Quality 4.36
Overall Satisfaction 4.73
Sedimentary Processes
Animation 4.64
Clarity 4.73
Length 5.00
Relevance 4.82
Quality 4.64
Overall Satisfaction 4.55
Relative Dating
Animation 4.45
Clarity 4.73
Length 4.55
Relevance 4.82
Quality 4.45
Overall Satisfaction 4.73
While some students praised the directness of the video, some criticized the length of the video, claiming it was too compact and it was difficult to process the information within such a short amount of time. Suggestions included increasing the length of the video to provide a more thorough explanation of the concepts presented by the video.
The students commented that the analogy used might not have been the best analogy for sedimentary processes.
The students commented regarding the accuracy of the figures shown in the animations and the overall pacing of the video.
The project was able to contribute to community development by educating people. It showed people how to understand Earth Science, and it helped the Grade 8 and 9 students better understand it. In their feedback, the students said these:
Some said that the time allotted for the videos was too short, and that they were compact, and that the animations were confusing at times. But they also liked the brevity and simplicity of the videos, and that they generally considered them as great.
Success?
1. If all three videos were uploaded onto YouTube - YES
2. The Earth Science teachers were able to give it positive feedback (via exit interview) - YES
3. If the videos helped the students (based on survey) - YES
YES!
But...
We still fell short in a lot of areas, as there were a lot of hardships and difficulties along the way.
We were disorganized as a group
We often failed to meet the deadlines set by ourselves
We crammed most of the videos
We were not punctual
According to Ma'am Mongcal...
We did not provide a clear detail about the project we were doing
We should have consulted more
We did not clearly communicate to the IS Unit what the project was about, as we just forwarded content for them to check
We did not have constant communication and consultation
But in the end, we were still able to make three minute videos on Earth Science and complete our goals.
What Will This Project Bring About?
Short and Long Term Benefits
Based on our evaluation, the videos were well received and are well suited to help Grade 8 students in their education on Earth Science. Of course, there are some things we could improve on, but our videos on sedimentary rocks, earthquakes, and relative dating can be considered a success.
In both short and long term, the videos will help Grade 8 students better understand the Earth Science topics they cover. They can be used as teacher's aids to help simplify the topic for them, and the students can watch it on their own in case they are struggling with the topics covered.
There are no current plans for continuing the videos by the original group of ES Plus, however, they may be contacted if anybody is interested. In case any continuations to the project are made, we would recommend doing the following:
cover more Earth Science topics
cover other subjects other than Earth Science
use alternative methods of animation to create the videos
Other recommendations include going into other topics, and make the videos longer if you find the length of the videos is insufficient
When working with a team, split the tasks more evenly, be more punctual, and have better communication with clients.
Conclusion and Recommendations
This project had taught us the importance of science education and communication. We were able to successfully create three videos about Earth Science for the IS Unit which may be used to teach Grade 8 students difficult topics in the subject and used as reference for anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge in the subject.
We would like to recommend anyone who would likeĀ to continue the project to be more consistent and more punctual in their work. We almost didn't finish the project because we were somewhat inconsistent and not punctual, which made it a lot harder. If you follow this advise, you will have an easier time working on the videos.
We would also recommend every member of your group is familiarized with the animation or video making process, such that the burden of animating or video editing would not fall on one member only.
Finally, we would like to recommend that whoever decides to continue our work enjoy the process of working on science communication snd education, if you really like it. It is a fun and fulfilling experience. :)
