About PSHS Main Campus
Philippine Science High School - Main Campus is a STEM-focused school. As such, most students may not be able to focus on their more creative and artistic side, even if art creation is just as important as subjects such as science.
As Pisay gears its students to be leaders in their own STEM fields as well as be community problem-solvers, it is important for them to learn from an often unheard voice in STEM education, a Filipino artist. In doing so, they are able to appreciate the work behind being an artist and open their eyes to the social advocacies and issues relevant to our country and local communities.
Objectives of our Project
The project aims to enhance PSHS-MC students’ practice of the humanities, and aims to expose them to the advocacies of Filipino artists in order to explore their own.
The project hopes to bring recognition to Filipino artists, as well as to give them a platform to voice out their advocacies and activities to the youth.
Our Project Implementation
Before Seminar
Before the seminar, the group first created reached out to Imahica Art Gallery through a letter of intent to discuss the event details. After inviting the artists, the group informed them of the talk's prompts and ideas for discussion. Once this was over, the group proceeded to the logistics of procuring event resources and preparing advertising materials.
During Seminar
The event was done at the PSHS ASTB hall from 1:15PM to 2:45PM on December 20, 2022 during the Humanities Festival. During the event, the speaker talked about how she uses art to express her advocacies. The participants were then guided through a series of questions by the host to spark their creative juices. After this, they were given oslo paper and oil pastels to create their own art to show their answers to these questions. Unused materials were then redistributed via raffle.

After Seminar
After preparing the venue, getting everyone seated, hosting that long engaging talk, and guiding our guests through the art creation process, the event finally concluded. We conducted an exit survey at the end of the event to get in touch with our fellow students. Let's see what their responses have to say!

Exit Survey
After preparing the venue, getting everyone seated, hosting that long engaging talk, and guiding our guests through the art creation process, the event finally concluded.
We conducted an exit survey at the end of the event to get in touch with our fellow students. Let's see what their responses have to say!
New advocacy?
The pie chart on the left shows the student responses if they have acquired a new advocacy after the talk. From the unsure answers, people cited that though they were not able to find a new advocacy, the event helped in reinforcing their belief in their own advocacies. Topics such as women’s rights, gender equality, body positivity, and most importantly, truth and critical action, were the common advocacies that the audience have gained through the event.
Sustainability
On the day of the event, students could claim free art prints of the speaker artist. We hope these physical art pieces will continue to inspire, even beyond the duration of the event.
It was so important to us that students were able to decide the focus of their own art. Instead of telling them what to believe, we encouraged reflection and self-determination so that the students would be their own agents of change.
Exponential, not linear growth.
The Humanities Festival only comes round once a year. We won't be here to see the next one, but at least we could strike the match for future batches to nurture their creative spirits.
Conclusions & Recommendations
For future groups who wish to continue or replicate our project, we recommend creating weekly art workshops in order to fuel students' passion in art and overall express their own advocacies.
