Project Implementation

project timeline
activities
Community VisitOur first communication with the community was with Marjorie C. Almoete, the field supervisor of the MMDA-MPCG Field Office in Ortigas, Pasig. We talked with her and tried to identify an issue that affects the Pasig MPCG with which our group may be able to offer our help. However, to better understand the concerns of the street sweepers, we decided that it would be best if we went to the field office ourselves and talked to them directly. On February 15, 2023, we were able to interview 18 members of the MPCG field office in a 1-hour long session, as can be seen in the images to the right.
Project Planning and PreparationAfter our community interview, we identified two issues that our initiative may be able to help in. After some group deliberation (an image of one of our group meetings is seen on the left), we initially decided to focus on the inadequate equipment for the workers. We wanted to hold a fundraiser activity to be able to donate new tools to the MMDA-MPCG office. However, due to implementation constraints, we thought that a fundraiser was not feasible anymore, therefore we decided to focus on a knowledge-transfer activity, addressing another one of the concerns of the community: health risks and occupational hazards.
With that, we decided on conducting an informational seminar about the health risks that MPCG's street sweepers face in their jobs daily. We also wanted to include a workshop on first-aid measures in case of work-related injuries. In order to accomplish this, we had to invite specialists on these topics. The preparation for the seminar entailed planning for the logistics of the activity, sending invitations to our speakers, letters of requests to the PSHS-MC and the MMDA-MPCG administrative offices as well as multiple consultation sessions (pictured on the right) with our SS6 adviser, Arnold Lapuz, who really helped us in the undertaking of this project.
Seminar on Health Risks and Occupational HazardsThe seminar (pictured on the right) took place on April 12, 2023, from 1:00 pm to around 3:00 pm, with 30 participating street sweepers from the MMDA-MCPG Pasig Field Office. We were able to invite Joselito Englatera and Dr. Lian Jamisola, MD, FPDS to be guest speakers at the seminar. Mr. Englatera is a teacher from Philippine Science High School Main Campus. On the other hand, Doctor Jamisola is a dermatologist who manages two clinics in Manila and practices at the University of the East - Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center and Tondo Medical Center.
The seminar was segmented into two parts: occupational hazards and first aid, delivered by Sir Englatera, and occupational health, with a focus on Sun and heat-related health risks, delivered by Dr. Jamisola. Each segment lasted 45 minutes, ending in a question and answer portion open to any of the participants. After Dr. Jamisola finished speaking, one of the members of the group, Gabriel Zara, made closing remarks and started a brief awarding ceremony to recognize the time and effort of our speakers. At the conclusion of the event, the group members finally served the prepared food and drinks for the participants of the seminar.
challenges during project implementation

We encountered time constraints as we consumed time in previous project proposals that were subsequently rejected; this led to another challenge as we were pushed towards the end of the month of February, nearing the conclusion of the allotted implementation dates for the SS6 outreach project. This meant that our available weeks for our project were limited, as the months of March and April were full of holidays and other curricular activities. This is visible in our project timeline above which contains many gaps in the number of weeks. This time limitation also meant that our original plan of holding a fundraiser and making a donation of tools to the Pasic MMDA-MPCG was no longer feasible.

Nonetheless, despite the many changes and modifications that we had to make in our project, we were still able to deliver a successful informational seminar session to the members of the MMDA-MCPG Pasig field office in Ortigas.
