Marikina is home to a number of shoemaking businesses. Many of these businesses, however, operate on traditional processes and are still owned by families or small-time individuals. Such businesses were the most affected by the pandemic: their limited access to resources prevented them from adapting to the changes in circumstance instigated by the pandemic. Additionally, most of these businesses were hesitant to adopt online selling as their owners were either unsure of its functions or unaware of its potential.
The Marikina Shoe Development Industry (MASIDO) is responsible for handling the countless small shoe businesses in the region. Its office used to be located in the Marikina City Hall; however, they had recently moved and are now based within the larger Marikina Sports Center located a short distance away from the city hall. The goal of the founding of MASIDO was to help promote and support smaller shoe businesses in the greater Marikina area.
MASIDO played a role in the completion of the project. It was through them that the shoemakers relevant to the study were interviewed. The on-site selling performed during the study was also carried out through MASIDO, and collaborations with the pertinent businesses were possible through them.
CPoint was one of the two businesses the group contacted for the shoe bazaar discussed in the implementation section of the project. They are a Marikina-based shoe business that manufactures mainly men's shoes and belts with a team of shoemakers. They are currently working on creating a women's shoes line.
Vestrada was the other of the two businesses the group contacted. It is important to note that Vestrada does not necessarily specialize in producing shoes. However, it was decided that the business would be included as the other shoemaking businesses backed out and it was deemed better to include another beneficiary for the study.
