Increase in motivation to study
Mentoring allows opportunities for a stronger motivation and academic performance in students
Developing a mentoring culture
The organization aims to develop a mentoring culture in the targetted community which in turn, will help boost the growth of the organization
Project Erudite aims to provide free mentoring services to the target communities (G7 PSHS students and Tandang Sora National High students) with the help of volunteer PSHS-MC students
Provide opportunities for student volunteers
Support the mentees academics
Determine the impact of online learning on the social integration and confidence of the mentees and mentors
P R E P A R A T I O N
Volunteer mentors come from Batches 2023 to 2026
They have an option to choose which subject they would like to teach such as Math or English
Over the summer break, each mentor is also given an opportunity to attend a series of workshops to orient and improve their mentoring skills to be used for this school year.
Math and English teachers and advisers are also contacted to consult the topics and materials to be taught to the students
I M P L E M E N T A T I O N
Mentoring sessions for English and Math were conducted synchronously on Saturdays at 1:05 PM - 2:30 PM and 2:35 PM - 4:00 PM respectively.
Implementation of sessions started during the 2nd quarter and went up until the 3rd quarter.
The sessions were held online in Zoom for PSHS and Google Meet for TSNHS.
Every session a feedback form is sent to the mentees to account for any feedback, questions, and concerns they have during the sessions. After collecting feedback, it is also shared with the mentors to answer any queries the mentees have.
C U L M I N A T I O N
To formally close off our mentoring program, we held culmination programs for our mentees. For TSNHS mentees, the culmination program was held at their school on April 12, 2023, while PSHS mentees had their culmination program on April 15, 2023, online. TSNHS mentees were given certificates of participation on-site.
Usually has a number of 30-40 mentees per session, with some fluctuations due to some events happening in their batch.
Only a few students would join the sessions for the Tandang Sora community. Moreover, there was little to no participation from the mentees.
The average score for English increased by 0.6 confirming the positive impact of our English mentoring program. As for the Mathematics program, there was a 0.07 increase in the average. Two of the students who answered both the pre and post-mentoring tests for Mathematics had a drastic increase in their scores: 8 to 9, and 2 to 6. These positive results confirm the effectiveness of the program.
There was overwhelming positive feedback.
Better understanding of the topics due to the sessions
Appreciation to the additional tips and techniques that they learned outside of their regular school curriculum.
The personalized attention and guidance that the students received were greatly appreciated, asit allowed questions regarding particular problems from each student to be asked.
Increase in confidence and preparedness in attending regular classes.
Newfound knowledge and techniques, that can be applied to regular classes, were obtained by students
This gave the students confidence made them better equipped to handle their coursework.
Overall, the success of our mentoring program is reflected in the positive impact it had on the learning experiences of the students.
Turnover of the Project
In order to continue the extensive learning provided by students from the premiere science high school of the Philippines, our group plans to turn over the program to mentors who showed potential in becoming project heads who can continue the program for the next academic year. These candidates come from non-graduating batches and show interest and desire in spearheading the program for a new academic year, set of mentors, mentees and community. Last May 8, 2023, we have officially turnover the project to future heads!
Positions to be held will be the following:
Overall Project Head
Math Head
English Head
Secretary
Treasurer and Auditor
Promotions Head
Session Recordings
Recordings of most of our sessions were made available for viewing should they need be by mentees who either missed a session or needed some catching up. This is to compensate for the mentees from either community not being required to adhere to a commitment form/contract.
The sessions were able to teach several 2nd and 3rd quarter topics in Math and English to students.
Mentors expressed how important for them to continue the project to help more students just like themselves with their academics, providing a sense of mentoring community one step at a time.
Both mentors and mentees expressed their enjoyment during the sessions. They were able to know and understand better each other through these.
Recomendations
Face-to-face classes
One of the recommendations in continuing this project would be to consider holding sessions face-to-face to further encourage participation and engagement during the session. The online set-up limits the interaction among the students and mentors which may affect the mentoring. Nevertheless, the online set-up was still able to achieve the current project objectives and was able to benefit many students in the community.
