Distribution of Uniform Vests for easier identification of Sitio San Roque Pedicab Drivers
about Sitio San Roque
Sitio San Roque is one of the largest informal settlements in the Philippines, located in Quezon City. Whilst facing problems such as red-tagging and demolition threats to urbanize and remove “flaws” from the city, one of the main objectives of the community is to fight the political agendas to demolish houses and evict the unwanted poor out of their homes. The present population in the area is composed of residents who were previously living in rural areas but migrated to the area after the fall of the Marcos dictatorship. Most, if not all protesters, are wrongfully arrested due to the will of private developers to urbanize the area. In the meantime, residents of the sitio have different labor intensive jobs, in fact, one of these job opportunities is led by a public transportation-based organization named SARPODA.
about SaRPODA
San Roque Agham Road Pedicab Operators and Drivers' Association (SARPODA) is a public transportation-based organization composed of pedicab drivers situated in Sitio San Roque. Some of their main pick-up and drop-off points include Centris, SM North, Trinoma, and Philippine Science High School - Main Campus (PSHS-MC) (see Figure 2). Aside from being geographically close to PSHS-MC, SARPODA is a neighboring community that is an integral part of the commuting experience of the PSHS-MC student commuters. Thus, SARPODA was chosen as the key beneficiary of the project.
Due to the lack of identification that is seen within the SARPODA community, the project aimed to make sure that most of the SARPODA community had a way for them to be easily identifiable from other pedicab drivers. Specifically, the group had aimed to create uniforms in the form of vests for the SARPODA pedicab drivers for easy identification.
The vests that were created would serve as a way for members of SARPODA to be easily identifiable. Since the vest is given only to registered members, there would not be a need for traffic enforcers to pull aside pedicab drivers to ask for their IDs, as reported. As for the benefit of the passengers, they would be safe and secure knowing that the pedicab driver they would be patronizing is registered.
objectives and significance of the project
conclusion &
recommendations
The group was able to accomplish the project while not only upholding the core values of the school but also the integrity of the self. From fundraising, to auditing, to community interaction, the project became fulfilling to both the SARPODA community but also to the group as scholars of the Filipino people. In the future, the implementation may also branch out to redistribution of vests to the pedicab drivers, but also reprinting of the logo of the tricycle drivers' association in Sitio San Roque so that the vests may also reach their community.
