The GDAPD of PHIVOLCS is the one responsible for disseminating any important information about earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity nation-wide. The seminar's resource speaker was provided by the GDAPD, alongside several handouts on disaster preparedness to be given to the project community.
The Mercedarian School of Barangay Greater Lagro is an integrated academic institution that caters to both primary and secondary students. It acted as the chosen community for the seminar; specifically, the event was held within school grounds, while seminar's primary audience were students of its Grade 4 and 5 batches.
The Mercedarian School is committed to "an integral education that assists the person to discover and develop one’s inner potentials and capabilities through the school’s educational programs that foster human integration, social responsibility and spiritual formation."
The Mercedarian School envisions "ideal learners who are free, responsible and life-giving persons committed to the transformation of a just and humane society characterized by Service, Justice, Faith and Love."
The Mercedarian campus is located at G0 Domingo de Ramos, Barangay Greater Lagro, Novaliches, Quezon City, Metro Manila.
Risk Assessment
The Mercedarian School is approximately 5.8 km northwest of the West Valley Fault system, making it susceptible to the "Big One" wherein the estimated damages fall under intensity VIII. This would affect all of Metro Manila, with the Mercedarian being no exception.
Furthermore, it is located downslope from the La Mesa Dam; should this be damaged during an earthquake, the school would be affected by any possible flooding.
Needs Assessment
The Department of Education requires all schools to conduct a seminar regarding this Earthquakes and its hazards. Furthermore, due to the hectic schedule of blended learning, as well as the student's recent return from an extended quarantine, Sir Raymund Gubat—the school's vice principal and student activity coordinator—expressed his concerns with the community's current knowledge on disaster preparedness.
