Meet the Team!
Healthy & Wise (H&W) Spending for Pisay is a group of students from block 12-H in PSHS-MC, with Mr. Vladimir Lopez as their gatekeeper for the community and as an expert economic consultant. H&W wants to spread general knowledge about financial literacy and healthy living to other students in the hopes that everyone would grow up to be healthy and wise.
Philippine Science High School - Main Campus
Home to almost 1500 students
PSHS-MC houses around 240 students per grade level, for a total of about 1440 students on campus.
Offers a wide range of amenities
PSHS-MC has laboratories, dormitories for some students, and concessionaires that offer food to the whole community.
Concessionaires also affected by rising prices
Due to the inflation rate of the Philippines at an all time high (Sicat, 2022), the prices in these concessionaires have also been increasing, from a 60-Peso rice meal back in SY 2019-2020 to a 70-peso to 90-peso rice meal set in the current school year 2022-2023.
Some student's saving strategies might be detrimental
Some dormers have opted for cheaper, but not necessarily healthier food options, or even just skipped meals entirely to fit their daily food into their budget. These saving strategies can have severe consequences in a scholar’s physical and mental health.
Enhanced Student Welfare
To help improve the current financial and physical well-being of PSHS scholars
Knowledge Transfer
To provide recommendations for appropriate and adaptable budget plans
Economic Adaptability
To impart financial literacy that remains relevant in any economic condition
Gathered information about student’s spending habits, preferred concessionaires, and favored food options.
The survey gathered 38 respondents, each expressing their preferred concessionaires for their daily meals.
Cheryl B. Dy, a diet expert, was consulted about what a student’s daily diet should consist of and which food options in PSHS-MC would best satisfy this diet.
Students from 10 - 18 years old need an average daily calorie intake between 2100 - 2600 calories.
Different food items are rich in:
Carbohydrates: rice, pasta, bread
Protein: meat, fish, beans
Fats: oils, lard, butter
Vitamins & Minerals: fruits, vegetables
Students should have the correct amounts of GO, GROW, and GLOW foods on their plate for a well-balanced diet. The recommended water intake is 8 - 10 glasses a day.
Mr. Vladimir Lopez served as the gatekeeper of the community and our economic consultant
Sir Vlad stated that due to increasing prices, students can buy less goods if their allowance remains the same
Increase a student's allowance to increase purchasing power, or decrease a student's expenses
Posters were placed at the Back Lobby
Posters were also disseminated through email
This survey aimed to measure the impact and informational value of the posters. The survey determined the effectiveness of the two posters as the chosen medium of knowledge transfer.
The respondents had varying degrees of knowledge gained from the posters’ educational content. Some students reported to have increased awareness in their eating and spending habits, while some students already knew about the topics contained within the posters.
On the other hand, the respondents found the posters’ layout to be organized overall. They had no major issues in the formatting and presentation in the posters. Almost all stated that the organization and presentation aspects of the posters did not distract the readers from learning new things from the posters.
Future research teams from Social Science 6 and/or Filipino 6 classes may opt to replicate this project and adapt it in their current economy. Possible variations may come from major changes in the concessionaires in Pisay, which may happen once the construction of the new cafeteria is finished. Although the continuity of the study is not guaranteed, such possible changes in the community will provide sufficient gaps for additional research.
The proponents of this project benefited from learning nutrition and financial literacy from both experts. Additional research for the posters also provided specific nutritional facts about food along with the concept of moderation. Lastly, the proponents were provided with some healthy and affordable food options in the school concessionaires from the study.
With the intent of serving the Pisay community, the project aimed to deliver nutritional and financial literacy such that students may be able to focus on excelling in their academic affairs. Based on the results, the project Tipid Tips was successful in fulfilling its objectives. Students reported increased awareness of their spending habits and nutritional needs. The provided food recommendations, although already familiar to the students, were helpful in identifying their nutritional content.
Instead of food, future studies may focus on other major expenses of students such as transportation costs, school supplies and materials for projects, and recreational costs. Additionally, changes in the community that affects the concessionaires may provide gaps for future research.
