Solace is Pisay’s Women Empowerment and Sexual Harassment Intervention Committee, which is a student organization that aims to create safe spaces for women and sexual harrassment survivors where they can feel recognized, heard, and empowered by spreading awareness on issues such as sexism and sexual harassment. They do this through information campaigns, seminars, and in general promoting feminism and raising awareness on issues that minorities face in Pisay, such as gender-based violence.
Solace launched in early 2022, founded by PSHS-MC Batch 2023 student Julia Martinez, as a committee focused on making sure that women and survivors of sexual harassment have a safe space for their voice to be heard. They not only aimed to create safe spaces, but also to protect them. Overall, their mission was to make Pisay’s culture more open to expressing themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination.
Over the course of 2022 they have held information campaigns on discrimination of women in school and other professional environments, martial law, and especially violence against women. They have also had talks or webinars with other advocates and activists on women’s issues, where the Pisay community was duly invited to listen and discuss.
The population is composed of the students, teachers, and staff of Philippine Science High School - Main Campus. Philippine Science High School is situated in Agham Road, Diliman, Quezon City. Despite the population being mostly educated when it comes to gender issues, related incidents can still occur, including a notable issue in 2019. There was a case wherein 14 sexual offenders leaked and passed around private photos of their female classmates. Despite committing a grave offense, these offenders were allowed by the Board of Trustees (BoT) to graduate, some even alongside their other classmates. (Yamsuan, 2019) This shows tolerance of the sexual harassment that has been done by these offenders. The BoT’s decision on this matter upset a large portion of the student body, which expressed disapproval and even fears regarding the willingness of the BoT to protect its students. With this, Solace, as a student organization, also aims to provide a source of comfort for those among the student body who may have misgivings when it comes to the administration’s capability to protect them.
