Raising Awareness on the Situation of Animal Shelters
with Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
PAWtapon Patrol is a group from 12 - A dedicated to discuss the conditions of the animal shelters in Quezon City, specifically Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) located in Aurora Blvd.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in the Philippines.
The organization focuses on disseminating knowledge about animal welfare, care, control, and other related issues in the hope of educating the public.
PAWS also actively campaigns against animal cruelty and pet neglect, such as dog fights, horse fights, and animals exploited for entertainment.
PAWS is not just an animal shelter that provides food, water, and healthcare to its residents — the organization also implements various programs aimed at addressing the needs of animals and promoting animal welfare.
"PAWS takes a firm stand on matters relating to animal welfare, and continues to lobby for better laws to ensure humane treatment of all animals."

PAWS relies on the support of volunteers to carry out its mission. The organization needs a constant influx of volunteer workers to help care for the animals in the shelter and participate in various programs, such as feeding and education programs.
The recent 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic was also one of the main contributors to the organization’s lack of funds.
Volunteers that would usually help out in taking care of the animals came less and donations decreased.
As of March 2023, the shelter is in its full capacity with around 300 dogs and cats with 10 requests receiced daily.
Given these problems, our project aimed to determine and figure out the causes for the increasing population of strays, possible preventions for the reproduction of strays, and the incentives that people had for abusing or abandoning them.
(1) To help the chosen animal shelter, which in this case was PAWS located in Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City; We want to lessen their workload and donate some cash to help add to their budget.
(2) To widen the research on strays in the Philippines by retrieving more information on the current situation of strays both in and out of the Philippine animal shelters, as there was little information and research on this available anywhere.
If the group raises at least 3,000 PHP worth of funds to be donated to the animal shelter.
If the group is able to care for and help at least ten stray animals (dogs and/or cats) during the on-site activities.
If the group could adequately ease the shelter’s workload by helping their undermanned staff by means of cleaning and other activities (i.e., book reading and animal petting).
If the group could properly document the entire project through both pictures and videos in and outside of the shelter as long as it has been allowed/permitted.
If the group could garner accurate information regarding the current situation of stray animals in the Philippines through personal stories, physical documentation, and other means, which could be shared with the general public and spread awareness.
Bark-ada Bites is a fundraising booth that aims to support the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Animal Rehabilitation Center by selling a variety of baked goods and merchandise.
Under the supervision of our Social Science 6 teacher, our menu featured delicious boat tarts, banana muffins, carrot cakes, and chocolate chip cookies for a low price that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth — all made with pure love!
Our proceeds went into providing food, vitamins, pet supplies, and cleaning materials for the animals at PAWS while also giving awareness to the passerby buying from our stall

Overall Profit!
Following coordination with PAWS, we scheduled the volunteer work day for March 25th. With the funds collected from the profits of Bark-ada Bites, we purchased and prepared the necessary materials under the guidance of Ms. Sharon.
The materials that we brought on the workday were those assigned by Ms. Sharon and included the following:
1 pail and 2 dippers (tabo)
2 kg detergent powder
1 jug of bleach
at least 2 deck brushes
at least 2 brooms (synthetic bristles)
2 dust pans
at least 5 rags
XXL garbage bags
at least 1-ft stack of old newspapers
With the cleaning materials requested by PAWS for volunteers to bring, the group cleaned areas of the facility. Several walkways were swept and subsequently scrubbed with soap in order to remove the obvious dirt that accumulated over time.
This cleaning program was done to help keep the shelter in a condition that is safe to both humans and the animals, and presentable to visitors!
Another program organized by PAWS is a cat socialization program wherein volunteers may go into the Kittenery and Cattery Annex where cats who are not scared of humans but not totally comfortable with them yet, and play around with the cats.
This allows cats to get used to the presence of humans, and it also allows them to interact with humans.
The book reading program saw volunteers reading children’s books to the dogs not only so that they may get used to a human’s presence, but that they may learn to trust humans again by seeing that not all humans mean them harm, especially within the shelter.
This distrust in humans was, for most of the dogs, a result of having received abuse from humans before they were taken in by PAWS.

One of the most important steps is to ensure that the materials are posted in a prominent and accessible location to provide the organization with a template for future donations that can be used for many years to come.
The aim is to raise awareness about the organization's efforts and encourage more people to get involved, which will also create a sustainable network of support that can continue to grow and thrive over time.
Specifically, plans have been made to assist future batches in Philippine Science High School who would wish to replicate our project with other animal shelter organizations aside from PAWS.
PAWS is accepting cash donations through their GCash and BPI accounts. They also accept cat and dog food donations by their shelter!
If you want to help them directly yourself, check out the links below!
Not only were several volunteering activities performed, but much information regarding the state of stray dogs and cats, how they may be helped, and the common misconceptions people have about them was gained through the implementation of this project.
Watch the video on the left to see what made the project worthwhile!
For future groups who wish to replicate our project, we recommend other organizations and groups that are in more need and are more open to volunteers as PAWS has stated that they are currently undermanned and will not be able to accommodate future volunteer groups from Philippine Science High School.
Such groups and organizations include:
"People helping animals. Animals helping people."
