Start by selecting the Editing Workspace
You can drag a clip, image or audio file directly from the project panel to the Timeline.
Use this process if you want just a segment of video.
Double-click your clip to open it up in the Source Panel on the top left.
Move your playhead to the frame where you would like the clip to begin.
Click (i) or use the Set In Point button
Move your playhead to the frame where you would like the clip to end.
Click (O) or use the Set Out Point button
Use the In and Out Markers
Drag the video from the Project Panel or Source Panel to insert the clip in your Timeline.
If you only want the video or audio, use these icons when you drag your clip over.
Use the razor tool to split a clip in two. (Ctrl + K)
Use the selection tool to trim the edges of a clip or use the Q and W shortcuts.
The ripple edit tool will remove the gap caused by trimming a clip. (selection tool + CTRL)
Pressing Delete, Backspace or Right-Clicking and selecting Clear will remove the clip but not shift the remaining clips to the left.
Pressing SHIFT + Delete or Right-Clicking and selecting Ripple Delete will remove the clip AND shift all clips to left.
Drag the clips to rearrange.
When dropping a clip on the cut between two clips hold down Control (CTRL) to perform an insert edit.
This will move all the clips to the right and provide space for the new clip to be inserted.
Not holding down CTRL will overwrite that section of the original clip with the new clip.
When editing a dialogue scene, it is common to cut away to a character’s reaction while another character continues speaking.
Instead of dragging the clip into the timeline, drag the filmstrip icon at the bottom of the source monitor to drag the video only with no audio.
Drop it on the video layer above the clip that you would like cut from.
1. To expand and minimize your timeline tracks.
Shift + / – handles both audio and video track height.
Ctrl + / – handles only video track height.
Alt + / – handles only audio track height.
2. To Zoom into a clip
ALT + Mouse Wheel will zoom in where you position your selection arrow.
Mouse Wheel will move left or right on a zoomed clip.
The backslash key (\) will zoom your sequence to show everything in the timeline.
3. Setting In and Out points
I - sets In Point.
O - sets Out Point.
You can clear In and Out points with Ctrl+Shift+I , Ctrl+Shift+O, and Ctrl+Shift+X for both.
4. Cutting Clips
Ctrl + K cuts the clip in two. It’s like using the Razor Tool, only faster. This works on active tracks.
Ctrl + Shift + K cuts all clips under the Playhead in two.
To delete a space between clips, click on the space and press Delete.
5 Ripple Trim
Q - Previous Edit to Playhead
W - Next Edit to Playhead
This kind of trimming is called Top & Tail Editing, and is by far the fastest way to remove the unwanted parts of a clip.
