Select either the Object Selection Tool, the Quick Selection Tool or the Magic Wand Tool.
With one of those tools selected, click on the SELECT SUBJECT Button. Photoshop's AI system will try and isolate the main subject.
Once you have a pretty good selection made, press the Select and Mask Button to refine your selection.
View setting - This lets you see how your selection looks on various backgrounds.
It’s always good to experiment with different background choices.
Definitely try the black and white option.
Increase the Opacity to 100%.
Use the Refine Edge or the Brush tool with (add or subtract) to fix any issues or missing parts.
Edge Detection - automatically figure out what areas you want to keep around the edges of your selection.
Smart Radius checkbox tells Photoshop to be a little smarter about what it chooses to select.
Increase the Radius setting. This gives Photoshop some information about how far out from the existing edges of the selection you want to look for things that may need to be selected.
Global Refinements
The Smooth setting will smooth off any jagged edges.
The Feather setting makes the edges blurry / soft.
Contrast firms up any soft edges.
The Shift Edge setting tells Photoshop to shift the entire selection inward or outward depending on which way you move the slider.
OUTPUT SETTINGS
Decontaminate Colors is only used when you have your subject on a colored background and the background has cast color onto the subject. (example: green screen)
Output To: Typically you output to a NEW LAYER WITH LAYER MASK.
When making selections, the Object Selection Tool and the Select and Mask Dialog are going to become your best friends.
There are two selection types that we can draw with the Object Selection Tool—Rectangle and Lasso
Auto-Enhance adds a slight amount of smoothing to the edges of your selection.
The Quick Selection tool is basically a brush.
The Quick Selection tool works just like a brush. It’s got Size and Hardness settings.
ADD MODE
The Quick Selection tool is automatically always in Add Mode (the middle icon; and you’ll see a + in the middle of your brush).
This means every time you click and- paint with the brush, it adds to the selection.
SUBSTRACT MODE
To remove parts, switch to the subtract mode by pressing - and - holding ALT.
The Magic Wand selects pixels based on tone and color.
It is exceptional at selecting large areas of solid color.
The Tolerance option tells Photoshop how different in tone and color a pixel can be from the area we clicked on for it to be included in the selection.
The lower the number, the pickier it is.
ADD & SUBTRACT MODE
Like the Quick selection tool, you can add or subtract from a selection.
Hold SHIFT to add or ALT to subtract.
Stray and wispy hair can be difficult to pick up on the original selection.
Once you've made your selection, click on the Select and Mask Button.
Click on the Refine Hair option
Use the Refine Edge Brush to Add or Subtract and fix any minor issues.
