Week ending: Friday 23rd February 2024

Dear Families,

We have had another brilliant start to a brighter new term in Reception! The children have dived straight into our new topic "Contrasting Countries" where we will be exploring the country Burkina Faso and activist Georgie Badiel inspired by our key text "The Water Princess". This week, we learned about African animals, Georgie's village and spoke about the similarities and differences. We have heard some amazing vocabulary while playing in our new "Woodberry Down Safari", "Jungle" and "Weather Station" role play areas! Reception will soon be hosting their own charity event to raise money for WaterAid. Keep posted for special invitations! In maths, the children have been counting, ordering and representing numbers to 15 using a range of manipulatives. We are so impressed with how independent and resilient the children have become with their learning. Please continue to share stories regularly and practise reading their phonics book each week!

We really enjoyed visiting the Museum Of Home before half term. Thank you to all our parent volunteers for your support. We look forward to the dryer and warmer days ahead and our next "Spring Nature Hunt" outing towards the end of term!

A friendly reminder that no parents should be entering the school building during morning drop off. If there are any problems, please let your class team know.

Best wishes,

The Reception Team

Our Book this week

Click on the picture below to listen to the story with your child, then ask them the suggested questions.

"Who is Georgie?"

What is Georgie's village called?

Where are Georgie and her mother going?

Our Song/Rhyme this week

Incy Wincy Spider

Can you sing along to our song of the week?

Our Words this week

We have learnt the words below this week. Can you ask your child the suggested questions to encourage them to use the words in a sentence?

Our Maths Learning this week

This week we have been exploring odd and even numbers. We learnt that an even number has equal groups of two (partners). We know that a number is odd if it can't be shared equally. We used the numicon to identify odd and even numbers! We recognised the pattern of odd and even numbers.

Our Phonics Learning this week

Practise the sounds we have learnt this week with your child by clicking on the pictures below. The more opportunities they have to see, hear and say the sounds, the more likely they are to stick. The videos will teach you too! Then practise learning to blend with Fred talk.

Morning Drop Off

A polite reminder that no parents should be entering the school building during the morning drop off. Please let a member of your class team know if there is any issue or if you would like to speak with them.

Reading Books

We change reading books every Monday. Please ensure you return your child's phonics book and reading for pleasure story book. Some children will have either a blending book, red or green phonics book or a reading sheet. Please practise as much as possible and ensure you share stories regularly with your child at home!
