Dear Families,
Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely break. The rain hasn't stopped our fantastic learning this week! We have started our new topic - ‘Diwali’. We have learnt about this special celebration of lights and made our own Rangoli patterns, lanterns and investigated sources of light. We even made our own clay diyas and decorated them! In maths, we have been practising addition, finding 1 more and counting on. The children were so smart and we saw some super smiles during our school photos on Thursday! The weather is set to get wetter so please ensure the children have a rain coat and a spare change of clothes on their peg (including wellies if possible) at all times.
This week we also sent out our reading book bags. Please practice reading with and to your child every day! We will swap book bags every Monday. Please join us for our rearranged Reception RWI & Early Reading Parent Workshop on Thursday 9th November at 9am.
Have a lovely and hopefully dry weekend!
Best wishes from the Reception Team
Click on the picture below to listen to the story with your child, then ask them the suggested questions.
What is Diwali?
How do we celebrate Diwali?
Can you retell the story? Who are the characters in our story?
We have learnt the words below this week. Can you ask your child the suggested questions to encourage them to use the words in a sentence?
What is Diwali?
What might you do in a temple?
How does you family celebrate special occasions?
What festivals do you celebrate with your family?
This week we began exploring addition and finding 1 more within 6. The children practised counting 1 more and finding 1 more using a number line. We even began recognising and writing our own addition equations.
Practise the sounds we have learnt this week with your child by clicking on the pictures below. The more opportunities they have to see, hear and say the sounds, the more likely they are to stick. The videos will teach you too! Click on your child's phonics teacher.
Try out one or both of these activities with your child this weekend. Please send us any photos you take or bring your child's learning into school - we'd love to see them!
Make your own Rangoli patterns using anything you may have around the house: colouring pencils, paint, flour or sand!
Use pasta or any objects to add two numbers together. Keep the numbers under six. Help your child count the total and say/write the equation.
Please come along to our Reception RWI & Early Reading Parent Workshop on Thursday 9th November at 9am in the bottom hall! Find out how you can help and the strategies we use to teach your children how to read.
Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every Monday so that we can exchange their phonics and reading for pleasure book for a new one!
EYFS are running very low on spare clothes in school. If anyone kindly has any spare trousers, leggings and underwear in sizes 3/4/5years that they would be able to donate to school, please bring them in. Any donations will be hugely appreciated!
Any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call the school office on 020 7253 9469 or email the team via tfoffice@newwaveferation.co.uk
