Week ending Friday 17th March, 2023

Dear Families,

The first week of our new topic of the Spring. We loved exploring our new role play area of a Garden centre, where we planted our own flower and cress seeds. We investigated the weather and conducted our own weather report. We also made weather dials and wind streamers! We enjoyed singing our own Mothers Day song in Music and creating Mothers Day paintings with Ms Hanssen to celebrate our special Mummies! We made Red Nose Day biscuits and designed our own noses. In Maths, we have been exploring sharing and halving. We practised finding half of a number by sharing into 2 groups. We learnt that only even numbers can be halved! Please remember to return book bags with both books and reading journals into school every Wednesday so they can be checked or changed. If the books are not returned, we will not be able to swap them or hand anymore out. Please ensure your child is practising their reading with you everyday! Next Tuesday, we are excited to visit a local park to investigate Spring nature and weather! Please return your completed permission slips on Monday.

Wishing our Mummies a lovely Mother's Day on Sunday!

Best wishes from the Reception Team

We have learnt the words below this week. Can you ask your child the suggested questions to encourage them to use the words in a sentence?

Spring

How do we know it is Spring?

Weather

What is the weather like today?

Foggy

Have you seen foggy weather before?

Our Maths Learning this week

This week, we have been learning how to half numbers. You have to share the amount into 2 equal groups. You must share 1 at a time to make sure the amount is the same and fair.

"Half of 6 is 3."

Can you share odd numbers?

Our Phonics Learning this week

Practise the sounds we have learnt this week with your child by clicking on the pictures below. The more opportunities they have to see, hear and say the sounds, the more likely they are to stick. The videos will teach you too! Then practise learning to blend with Fred talk.

Activities to try at home this weekend

Try out one or both of these activities with your child this weekend. Please send us any photos you take or bring your child's learning into school - we'd love to see them!

Halving

Practise halving different amounts with your children. Remember to give one to you, one for your partner, one to you, one for your partner. Make sure your groups are equal! Equal means the same!

Weather Forecasts

This week we have looked at the weather in our area. Go for a walk and look at the weather. What is the weather like? Can you use your weather dial? Can you watch a real weather forecast on the TV?

Can you write a simple sentence about the weather?

It is...

The weather is...

School Trip- Tuesday 21st March

We will be visiting Sheperdess Walk Park on Tuesday afternoon to explore local nature in Spring. Please make sure you return the permission slip on Monday. We are looking for some parent volunteers. Please let us know if you are interested.

Reading Journals/Books

Each week the children will receive a RWI book/Ditty sheet which has simple words/sentences to practise their reading skills.  Please ensure you practise these with your child.  Children use their sound knowledge to say the individual sounds of the word, then blend together to read the word.

For example:

c - a - t      cat

l - a - m - p     lamp

Please ensure both RWI and story books are returned every WEDNESDAY so they can be changed. We will not send new books home without them being returned. Thank you!

No Toys or Jewellery

A polite reminder that no toys or special jewellery is allowed into school to avoid any damages or loss. Thank you!
