CHEM 8
Naming Organic Compounds
In order to pass this class, you will need to learn how to name organic compounds. This website to the left is a resource to look to outside of class if you get stuck or can't remember a particular rule.
Goals this week with the Chemistry tutors:
name all the functional groups in a compound without using your notes
draw a compound given its name
be able to differentiate between functional groups
discuss how to study for this topic
ask the tutor how to make flash cards for each functional group
ask the tutor about making a cheat sheet for the naming rules
discuss how to take and study from practice tests
Activities to do at home:
Create flash cards
make your own compound and try to name it
work on creating a list of the naming rules and reducing to as few words as possible
begin memorizing functional groups
summarize the lecture into 5 sentences
work on homework
use the provided link
Organic Acid-Base Reactions
This subject is a culmination of acid-base chemistry, organic compounds, and using arrows in organic reactions. The main focus here though, will be on the use of arrows to show the movement of electrons.
Goals this week with the Chemistry tutors:
review the three subjects discussed
have the tutor give practice reactions
ask the tutor about what an arrow represents
be able to identify what makes a compound acidic or basic
understand where arrows start and end
be able to predict the products of a reaction
discuss how to study for this topic
ask the tutor about making flash cards for these reactions
discuss how to take and study from practice tests
Activities to do at home:
Create flash cards
determine the differences between a Bronsted-Lawry and Lewis acid/base pair
use arrows in different reactions
summarize the lecture into 5 sentences
work on homework
watch the Khan academy video
