To keep our printers running smoothly and reduce filament waste, it’s important that partially‑used spools stay intact. Separating spool halves while filament is still on the hub often leads to abandoned coils, tangled filament, and unnecessary material loss.
Check the filament cabinet first
to see if the color you need is already loaded on a reusable spool. Using an existing spool prevents unnecessary opening of new refills and keeps inventory predictable.
If you want to switch to a new color:
Do not separate the reusable spool halves on a spool that still has filament on it.
The remaining filament should stay on its spool, fully assembled.
Select an empty reusable spool
from the filament cabinet.
Load the new refill onto the empty spool
, following the standard refill procedure.
Return the previous spool—with filament still intact and the spool halves still locked together—to the filament storage cabinet.
This keeps the filament clean, organized, and ready for the next user.
Please reassemble the spool and return it to storage. If the filament is tangled or damaged, notify a lead so we can assess whether it can be salvaged.
This practice ensures:
Less wasted filament
Cleaner storage
Faster color changes
Predictable AMS behavior
A consistent workflow for all members
