Only trained members may operate the table saw.
Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
No freehand cuts
— fence or miter gauge must be used.
Use the blade guard whenever possible; use the riving knife when the guard cannot be used.
Keep hands 6 inches or more from the blade.
Never stand directly behind the blade — stand slightly to the side.
Do not cut warped, twisted, or bowed lumber.
Do not cut wet wood.
Do not cut pressure treated wood.
Do not cut laser cut wood.
Do not cut metal.
Never cut conductive or wet materials (they will trigger the brake).
Confirm the fence is locked before cutting.
Never reach over or behind the blade.
If the wood binds, chatters, or burns, stop immediately.
The table saw is NOT an assembly surface
The SawStop brake fires when the blade contacts conductive material (e.g., skin). When triggered:
The brake cartridge slams into the blade.
The blade drops below the table.
The saw stops instantly.
The blade and brake cartridge must be replaced.
Materials that can trigger the brake:
Wet lumber
Pressure‑treated lumber
Foil‑backed plywood
Metal‑contaminated wood
Carbon‑filled plastics
Aluminum or conductive tape
Very green wood
If you suspect a material may trigger the brake, ask the Woodshop Area Captain before cutting.

Inspect the saw for damage or loose parts.
Ensure the blade guard or riving knife is installed.
Verify the blade is sharp and appropriate for the cut.
Check the fence for square and alignment.
Set blade height to ⅛”–¼” above the workpiece.
Confirm dust collection is on.
Check the brake indicator lights for normal status.
Ensure the workpiece is flat and free of nails, screws, or staples.
Ripping
Set the fence width and lock it.
Place the board flat against the table and fence.
Keep hands clear; use push sticks for narrow cuts.
Feed smoothly and steadily through the blade.
Maintain pressure against the fence, not the blade.
Continue pushing until the board is fully past the blade.
Crosscutting
Use the miter gauge — never the fence for crosscuts.
Support long boards properly.
Hold the board firmly against the miter gauge fence.
Push forward smoothly through the blade.
Disconnect power before changing blades.
Raise the blade fully and remove the throat plate.
Use the arbor wrench to remove the blade.
Install the correct brake cartridge:
Standard cartridge
for 10” blades
Dado cartridge
for dado stacks
Reinstall the blade and throat plate.
Perform the SawStop test mode check before cutting.
If the brake fires, notify the Area Captain immediately.

Kiln‑dried hardwood
Kiln‑dried softwood
Plywood (non‑foil)
MDF
Melamine
Laminated wood products
Not allowed:
Wet lumber
Pressure‑treated lumber
Foil‑backed sheet goods
Metal, plastic, or conductive materials
Resin‑coated boards
Anything containing fasteners
Use the riving knife or guard at all times.
Never cut warped or twisted boards.
Maintain firm pressure against the fence.
Do not pull stock backward through the blade.
Stand out of the kickback line.
Use featherboards for long or thin rips.
Turn off the saw and wait for the blade to stop.
Brush off dust from the table and fence.
Vacuum the cabinet area and floor.
Return push sticks and miter gauge to storage.
Report dull blades or brake warnings.
Turn off dust collection when you are finished
Replace the table saw cover board
Burn marks
Feed rate too slow or blade dull.
Fence misalignment
Check locking mechanism; notify Area Captain.
Brake warning lights
Cartridge may be improperly seated or blade conductivity detected.
Material stalls or binds
Board may be warped; stop immediately.
System Status Codes
Make certain the paddle switch is pushed in, the toggle switch is off, unplug the machine, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try again.
