Tool Authorization Overview

How members become authorized to use restricted tools at Loveland CreatorSpace.

Loveland CreatorSpace uses a formal tool authorization system to ensure safe, responsible use of high‑risk equipment. Authorization protects members, prevents equipment damage, and maintains a consistent standard of training across all shop areas.

This page explains which tools require authorization, how to get authorized, and how permissions are managed.

For the step-by-step process used during training, see the Tool Authorization Checklist.  The checklist is a good idea for you to use with any tool, not just the tools that require authorization.  Once the Checklist is complete, fill out the LCS Equipment and Membership Certification form.  This will be used to update your fob.

1. Purpose of Tool Authorization

Tool authorization ensures that:

• Members understand safe operation of high‑risk tools

• Equipment is used correctly and maintained properly

• The space remains safe for everyone

• Only trained members can access tools capable of causing serious injury or damage

Authorization is not a test — it’s a guided learning process to help you use tools confidently and safely.

2. Tools Requiring Authorization

The following areas require authorization before use:

3D Printing

• Bambu Lab printers

Wood Shop

• Table saw

• Planer

• Jointer

• Bandsaw

• Drill press

• Sanders

• Any powered cutting or shaping equipment

CNC

• CNC routers

• CNC mills

• Any computer‑controlled cutting equipment

Laser Cutters

• CO₂ laser cutters

Metal Shop

• Metal lathe

• Bridgeport mill

• Horizontal/vertical bandsaws

• Grinders

• Welders

Special Case: Glass Kiln

• Only instructors operate the kiln

• Members do not receive authorization to run the kiln

• All firing is done during classes or Open Studio

3. How to Get Authorized

Authorization is simple and member‑friendly.

Step 1 — Speak to the Director

The Director manages all tool authorizations.

Tell them which tool or shop area you want to be authorized for.

Step 2 — Receive Guidance and Training

The Director will:

• Explain the training process

• Connect you with an instructor or area lead

• Schedule a walkthrough or hands‑on session

• Ensure you understand safety rules and proper operation

Training may include:

• Demonstration

• Hands‑on practice

• Safety briefing

• Review of shop‑specific rules

Step 3 — Complete the Tool Authorization Checklist

During training, you will complete the Tool Authorization Checklist, which covers:

• Tool introduction

• Safety and PPE review

• Startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures

• Tool setup

• Supervised operation

• Cleanup and tool care

• Rules and limitations

This is not a test — it’s a guided process to confirm you can use the tool safely and confidently.

Once the checklist is complete, you are ready to fill out the LCS Equipment and Membership Certification.

Step 4 — Authorization Added to Your Fob

Once you’re cleared:

• The Director updates your member fob permissions (if applicable)

• Your fob will unlock the tool or area

• You’re now authorized to use the equipment independently

4. Who Can Authorize Members

Authorization is managed centrally to ensure consistency.

• Director — oversees the entire authorization system

• Area Leads — assist with training and evaluation

• Instructors — provide hands‑on guidance

• Glass Kiln Instructors — run kiln operations (no member authorization)

Area Leads and Instructors use the Tool Authorization Checklist to ensure consistent training across all shop areas.

Only the Director can update fob permissions.  The director needs a completed LCS Equipment and Membership Certification form filled out.

5. Expectations for Authorized Users

Authorized members must:

• Follow all posted rules

• Use tools safely and responsibly

• Clean up after each session

• Report damage or hazards immediately

• Help maintain a safe environment

• Support new members learning the space

Authorization is a privilege — treat it with respect.

6. Loss of Authorization

Authorization may be suspended if:

• Tools are used unsafely

• Rules are ignored

• Equipment is damaged through misuse

• Repeated violations occur

• Behavior endangers members or property

Suspension may be temporary or permanent depending on severity.

Authorization can be reinstated after retraining.

7. Guests and Visitors

Guests may:

• Observe authorized members

• Participate in classes

• Use tools only under direct instructor supervision

Guests may not use restricted tools independently.
