VCarve Pro is the primary CAM (Computer‑Aided Manufacturing) software used at Loveland CreatorSpace for generating toolpaths for our CNC routers, including the AvidCNC and 750mm x 750mm / 4×8 shop routers. This page introduces members to the essential workflow, tools, and concepts needed to prepare clean, safe, and effective CNC jobs.
A CAM program used to convert 2D or 2.5D designs into CNC toolpaths
Supports pocketing, profiling, drilling, v‑carving, and engraving
Works with DXF, SVG, EPS, AI, and bitmap tracing
Provides simulation to preview cuts before running them on the machine
VCarve is required for all CNC router jobs at CreatorSpace unless otherwise authorized.
Import or create your design (DXF/SVG or drawn inside VCarve)
Set up your material (size, thickness, origin)
Choose the correct tool (bit selection)
Create toolpaths (pocket, profile, v‑carve, etc.)
Simulate the job to verify correctness
Export G‑code for the correct machine
Run the job on the CNC router
Enter X/Y dimensions of your stock
Enter thickness (critical for Z‑zeroing)
Choose Z‑zero position:
Top of material (most common)
Machine bed (for precise depth cuts)
Set XY origin (lower‑left or center)
Correct material setup prevents ruined stock and broken bits.
Use Import Vectors for DXF/SVG
Use Import Bitmap for tracing logos or artwork
Draw lines, rectangles, circles, arcs
Use Node Editing to refine shapes
Use Join Vectors to fix broken paths
Clean vector geometry is essential for reliable toolpaths.
CreatorSpace maintains a standard set of CNC bits:
End mills (⅛", ¼", ½") for pocketing and profiling
Ball nose bits for 3D relief
V‑bits (60°, 90°) for engraving and v‑carving
Surfacing bits for flattening spoilboards
Pocketing: Flat end mill
Profiling: Flat end mill
V‑carving: V‑bit
Engraving: V‑bit or small end mill
3D carving: Ball nose
Feeds and speeds must match the bit and material.
Removes material inside a boundary
Set cut depth, step‑over, and ramp options
Cuts along a vector
Choose inside, outside, or on the line
Add tabs to hold parts in place
Uses V‑bits to carve lettering or decorative shapes
Depth is determined by vector width
For simple plunge holes
Used for relief carving
Requires ball‑nose bits
Always simulate your job before exporting.
Check for missing vectors
Verify cut depths
Ensure tabs are placed correctly
Look for unexpected tool movements
Simulation prevents costly mistakes on the machine.
Choose the correct post‑processor for the machine:
AvidCNC (Mach4)
Shop‑built 750mm x 750mm / 4×8 routers (Mach3/Mach4 depending on configuration)
Export the toolpath as a .tap or .nc file.
Forgetting to set material thickness correctly
Using the wrong post‑processor
Not adding tabs to profile cuts
Overlooking ramping options for deep pockets
Using a bit that’s too large for fine details
Not simulating before exporting
Use ramping to reduce bit stress
Keep step‑over reasonable for smooth pockets
