When the Expert 24LX only allows cutting on a narrow portion of your material (for example, recognizing only 6" of a 12" sheet), the machine is misreading the usable width. This is almost always caused by incorrect pinch‑roller placement or media loading mode. Use the steps below to correct the issue.
The cutter will only acknowledge material that is directly under the pinch rollers and grit rollers. If a roller is even slightly outside a valid zone, the machine will report a much smaller width.
Move both pinch rollers so they sit directly above the silver grit rollers.
Ensure each roller is inside one of the marked pinch‑roller zones on the top rail.
Lock the rollers down firmly so they apply even pressure.
Important: If any portion of your vinyl is outside the roller span, the cutter will ignore it.
The Expert 24LX behaves differently depending on how the material is loaded.
Power on the cutter.
Load the vinyl so it is straight and fully under both rollers.
On the front panel, select ROLL (not “Piece”).
Allow the machine to perform its width scan.
“Roll” mode tells the cutter to measure the full available width between the rollers.
If the vinyl is skewed, the cutter may detect a narrower width.
Align the leading edge squarely against the front guide.
Tug gently on both sides to ensure the vinyl feeds evenly.
Re‑run the width scan if needed.
If the cutter still reports a narrow width:
Make sure no debris is blocking the optical sensor path.
Verify the vinyl is opaque enough for the sensor to detect edges.
Try a fresh piece of material to rule out damaged or curled edges.
Some design software can override cutter width detection.
In your cutting software, confirm the device width is set to 24".
Ensure no “safe margin” or “restricted area” setting is enabled.
Re‑send the job after the cutter has correctly scanned the material.
This almost always means one pinch roller is not over a grit roller. Re‑check roller placement carefully — even a few millimeters off can cause the cutter to misread the width.
Place pinch rollers directly over grit rollers.
Use ROLL mode for full‑width detection.
Keep vinyl straight and fully under both rollers.
Re‑scan width after adjustments.
