Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can silently damage or weaken electronic components long before a failure becomes visible. A static shock too small for a human to feel can destroy microcontrollers, sensors, ICs, MOSFETs, and other sensitive parts. Good ESD habits protect our shared equipment, reduce project failures, and keep the lab reliable for everyone.
ESD occurs when two objects with different electrical charges come into contact. Common causes include:
Walking on carpet
Wearing synthetic clothing
Handling plastic containers
Sliding components across a bench
Touching sensitive parts without grounding
You don’t need to feel a shock for damage to occur — most harmful discharges are below human perception.
All electronics benches are equipped with grounded ESD mats. When working with sensitive components:
Place boards, ICs, and modules directly on the mat
Avoid working on bare wood or metal surfaces
Keep the mat clean and free of debris
For microcontrollers, ICs, and other static‑sensitive devices:
Clip the wrist strap to the mat’s grounding point
Ensure the strap is snug against your skin
Do not bypass or disconnect the ground lead
If you’re unsure whether a component is sensitive, assume it is.
Hold boards by the edges
Avoid touching pins, pads, or exposed traces
Keep components in anti‑static bags until use
Return unused parts to their anti‑static packaging
Keep plastic containers off the mat
Avoid sliding boards or tools across the bench
Keep liquids away from electronics
Minimize clutter that can snag wires or generate static
Turn off power supplies before wiring changes
Verify polarity before connecting leads
Never hot‑plug unknown or untested circuits
Common items that require ESD precautions:
Microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, RP2040)
Logic ICs (74‑series, CMOS)
MOSFETs and FET drivers
Sensors (IMUs, environmental sensors, RF modules)
Memory chips
Any component labeled “ESD Sensitive”

When finished:
Return components to anti‑static bags or bins
Coil and store wrist straps neatly
Leave the mat clear for the next member
Report damaged straps, mats, or grounding points to a lead
