YEAR 6 | The PYPx
UNIT OF INQUIRY
THE PYPx
Students will lead their own inquiries into real-world issues they care about. They will identify problems, ask deep questions, and take meaningful action. Through this process, students will develop key understandings about responsibility, perspective, and change. They will apply and grow their research, communication, self-management, and thinking skills. The Exhibition encourages independence, collaboration, and reflection. It celebrates each student’s voice and empowers them to make a positive impact in their community and beyond.
LANGUAGE
INQUIRY IN ACTION
This language unit will be fully integrated with the PYPx, giving students the opportunity to apply their reading, writing, speaking, and research skills in a meaningful context. Through this project, students will communicate their ideas clearly, organize information effectively, and express their thinking with purpose and voice. This unit will support them in using language to inquire deeply, collaborate with others, and share their learning with an authentic audience.
MATHS
FRACTIONS
Students will explore how fractions, decimals, and percentages represent parts of a whole and connect to each other. Through inquiry, they will model, compare, and operate with these forms using real-world problems. They will develop strategies to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals. Visual tools and hands-on tasks will support deep understanding. Students will build skills in reasoning, communication, and problem-solving, learning to explain their thinking clearly and apply concepts flexibly in everyday contexts.
PORTUGUESE
PYP EXHIBITION
In this unit, integrated with the PYP Exhibition, students will mobilise and apply the Portuguese language knowledge, skills and strategies developed throughout the PYP to inquire, construct meaning and communicate their learning independently and purposefully. According to the needs of their projects, they will select and produce different types of written, oral, visual and multimodal texts, making decisions about structure, language, register, organisation and presentation resources according to purpose, audience and context.
Students will critically read, select, interpret, synthesise and communicate information, construct and justify ideas, and integrate different perspectives and evidence. They may use interviews when relevant to their inquiry, formulating questions, listening actively and using responses as sources of information and perspective. Through planning, creating, revising and presenting their content, students will demonstrate increasing independence, creativity and responsibility in using the Portuguese language as a tool for inquiry, expression and action.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
SUPPORTING PYP EXHIBITION
During the PYP Exhibition, PE will support students by providing opportunities to apply teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience, self-management, and responsible decision-making in authentic physical contexts. Students may make connections between their Exhibition inquiries and areas such as health and well-being, sport, movement, safety, inclusion, sustainability, leadership, or community action, while PE lessons continue to help them manage challenges, collaborate effectively, reflect on their choices, and take responsibility for their own and others’ well-being.
