YEAR 5 | UNIT 2
UNIT OF INQUIRY
HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES
Students will explore how economic systems work and depend on each other. They will investigate supply and demand, how goods and services are distributed, their role as responsible consumers and apply their understanding when creating a marketplace. Using thinking and self-management skills, students will ask questions, make connections, and reflect on their choices. They will examine issues like scarcity and inequity, and understand their impact on the world.
LANGUAGE
THE POWER OF PERSUASION
Students will explore the power of words and images to persuade. They will read and analyze persuasive texts to understand structure, language, and techniques. They will respond by identifying key ideas, forming opinions, and making connections. They will critique how authors use facts, visuals, and emotion to influence thinking. They will produce their own persuasive texts, using strong vocabulary, figurative language, and design to convince others to buy their product or support their ideas.
MATHS
MEASUREMENT
Students will measure, compare, and convert length, mass, capacity, area, perimeter, and time using standard units. They will choose the right tools, read scales, and use decimals and fractions in real-life situations. Students will calculate area and perimeter, use formulas, and solve problems with metric conversions. They will tell time on different clocks, calculate time intervals, and use calendars and timetables. Students will build an understanding of measurement in the world around them.
NUMBER OPERATIONS
Students will build fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will use strategies, models, and algorithms to solve problems with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students will explore the relationships between operations and apply them to real-life word problems. They will multiply two-digit numbers, divide with remainders, and use equations to represent unknowns. By comparing quantities and using estimation, students will strengthen their number sense and problem-solving skills across all four operations.
