SHARING THE PLANET

Students will explore how living things adapt to survive in changing environments. They will investigate the form and function of adaptations and the causes behind environmental change. Using thinking, research, and self-management skills, students will ask questions, analyze evidence, and draw conclusions about survival. They will build understanding of form, function, and change while developing a balanced view of life on Earth.

AUTHOR'S CRAFT

Students will explore how authors use craft to shape meaning and connect with readers. They will analyze word choice, structure, voice, and literary techniques across different texts. Through inquiry, students will think critically, communicate ideas, and apply new strategies in their own writing. They will compare perspectives, reflect on author purpose, and make connections between texts. This unit builds understanding of form and perspective while strengthening communication and creative expression.

DATA HANDLING

Students will collect, organize, and display data using charts, tables, bar graphs, and line graphs. They will pose questions, interpret data, and compare different types of graphs. Students will understand mode, range, and how scale affects data display. They will explore probability through real-life experiments, predict outcomes, and describe chances using simple numerical notation. By analyzing patterns and results, students will build skills in data handling and probability.

NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE

Students will deepen their understanding of the base 10 system and explore place value in large numbers. They will read, write, compare, and order numbers up to a million and with decimals. Students will round numbers, recognize patterns in even, odd, prime, and composite numbers, and work with factors and multiples. They will double and halve large numbers and understand how digits relate by place value. These skills will strengthen their number sense and build confidence with complex numbers.

REPORTING ON LIFE, ADAPTATION AND CHANGE

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through meaningful connections with the Year 5 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. Using living things, inherited features, environmental change, adaptation, and survival as contexts, students will read, discuss, interpret, and create news and journalistic texts to access and communicate their UOI learning. They will identify main events and key information, distinguish important facts and supporting details, interpret headlines, photographs, captions, and quotations, and consider how information is selected and presented for an audience.

As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop oral communication by reporting information, conducting or presenting interviews, discussing current events, and using clear, organised, and appropriately expressive language. They will examine the structure and features of news reports, including headlines, leads, body paragraphs, quotations, photographs, and captions, and create their own increasingly coherent journalistic texts. Students will strengthen their use of factual and objective language, paragraphing, punctuation, adjectives, subject and predicate, while planning, drafting, revising, and editing their work for clarity, accuracy, organisation, purpose, and audience.

ADAPTING MOVEMENT FOR SURVIVAL

Students will develop their skills through Animal Flow, Parkour, and Swimming, with a focus on agility, balance, strength, coordination, efficient movement, and resilience. Integrated with the Year 5 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how adaptation, environment, movement, and survival are connected. Through animal-inspired movement and parkour challenges, they will investigate how different animals move in ways that help them survive in their environments, then apply similar ideas as they balance, climb, jump, crawl, and navigate obstacles. In Swimming, students will explore how aquatic animals are adapted for movement in water and consider how body position, streamlined movement, and environmental conditions influence efficiency and survival. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will refine complex locomotor combinations, improve personal fitness, adapt to unfamiliar environments, persevere through physical challenges, and reflect on the role of resilience in movement and performance.
