WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE & TIME

Students will investigate how exploration creates new opportunities and deepens understanding. They will explore why people and scientists seek out new places and ideas, and what impact exploration has over time. Through research and critical thinking, students will ask questions, analyze causes, and consider different perspectives. They will grow as principled inquirers, understanding the responsibility that comes with discovery. 

WINDOW INTO CULTURE

Students will explore traditional tales from diverse cultures to understand story structure, author’s purpose, and messages within stories. They will respond by making connections, asking questions, and sharing personal reflections. They will critique texts by analyzing voice, style, and meaning. They will produce their own well-structured narratives, using rich vocabulary, figurative language and imagery to express ideas and cultural understanding. Through this process, students will read, think, and write with deeper insight and creativity.

PATTERN & FUNCTION

Students will explore number patterns and learn how to describe, extend, and create them using all four operations. They will represent patterns in words, charts, and symbols, and discover rules behind them. Students will build fluency with number properties and use inverse operations to solve problems. They will use tables, graphs, and equations to show patterns and relationships. Students will gain a strong foundation in algebraic thinking.

NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE

Students will deepen their understanding of the base 10 system and explore place value in large numbers. They will read, write, compare, and order numbers up to a million and with decimals. Students will round numbers, recognize patterns in even, odd, prime, and composite numbers, and work with factors and multiples. They will double and halve large numbers and understand how digits relate by place value. These skills will strengthen their number sense and build confidence with complex numbers.

EXPLORING STORIES, PERSPECTIVE AND CHANGE

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through meaningful connections with the Year 5 Where We Are in Place and Time Unit of Inquiry. Using exploration, discovery, challenge, innovation, and different perspectives as contexts, students will read, discuss, interpret, and create narrative texts that help them access and communicate their UOI learning. They will identify key ideas and details, analyse cause and consequence, interpret characters’ perspectives, make inferences using textual evidence, and discuss how events and choices shape a narrative. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will continue developing reading fluency, oral communication, visual literacy, and narrative writing by organising ideas into coherent paragraphs, using richer descriptive vocabulary and linking words, and applying grammar and punctuation with increasing accuracy. They will also plan, draft, revise, and refine their writing so that their narratives are clear, well structured, detailed, and appropriate for purpose and audience.

EXPLORING MOVEMENT,  SPORT AND CULTURE

Students will develop their physical skills through Olympic activities, Traditional Games, and Swimming, exploring how sport and movement can connect people across different cultures, places, and periods of time. Integrated with the Year 5 Where We Are in Place and Time Unit of Inquiry, students will investigate the history and values of the Olympic Games, explore traditional games from different cultures, and consider how sport reflects heritage, traditions, exploration, challenge, and global connections. Through swimming, students will experience exploration and personal challenge as they develop technique, endurance, confidence, and water safety. Across the unit, they will demonstrate perseverance, respect, cooperation, fair play, and excellence while reflecting on how participation in physical activity can lead to discovery and personal growth. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will refine complex locomotor combinations, control objects with increasing precision, apply movement skills to improve personal fitness, and recognise how personal and cultural values can influence choices, behaviours, and interactions with others.
