UNIT OF INQUIRY
WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE & TIME
Students will investigate how exploration creates new opportunities and deepens understanding. They will explore why people and scientists seek out new places and ideas, and what impact exploration has over time. Through research and critical thinking, students will ask questions, analyze causes, and consider different perspectives. They will grow as principled inquirers, understanding the responsibility that comes with discovery.
LANGUAGE
WINDOW INTO CULTURE
Students will explore traditional tales from diverse cultures to understand story structure, author’s purpose, and messages within stories. They will respond by making connections, asking questions, and sharing personal reflections. They will critique texts by analyzing voice, style, and meaning. They will produce their own well-structured narratives, using rich vocabulary, figurative language and imagery to express ideas and cultural understanding. Through this process, students will read, think, and write with deeper insight and creativity.
MATHS
PATTERN & FUNCTION
Students will explore number patterns and learn how to describe, extend, and create them using all four operations. They will represent patterns in words, charts, and symbols, and discover rules behind them. Students will build fluency with number properties and use inverse operations to solve problems. They will use tables, graphs, and equations to show patterns and relationships. Students will gain a strong foundation in algebraic thinking.
NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE
Students will deepen their understanding of the base 10 system and explore place value in large numbers. They will read, write, compare, and order numbers up to a million and with decimals. Students will round numbers, recognize patterns in even, odd, prime, and composite numbers, and work with factors and multiples. They will double and halve large numbers and understand how digits relate by place value. These skills will strengthen their number sense and build confidence with complex numbers.
