YEAR 3 | UNIT 3
UNIT OF INQUIRY
WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE & TIME
Students will explore how artifacts give us clues about people, places, and events from the past. They will investigate different ways history is recorded and understand why preserving artifacts matters. Through guided inquiry, students will strengthen their research skills and build connections between the past and present. They will think critically about information and its sources, developing a deeper sense of responsibility as they uncover the stories behind historical objects.
LANGUAGE
HOT OF THE PRESS
Students will become reporters by reading, researching, and writing various reports, including articles and news stories. They will learn to gather facts from reliable sources and organize information clearly. Students will use text features like headlines and captions to make their reports easier to understand. They will practice writing with purpose, editing for accuracy, and using correct spelling and grammar. Through their research, they will develop skills in note-taking, paraphrasing, and referencing sources.
MATHS
PATTERN & FUNCTION
Students will explore patterns in numbers and understand how they help solve problems. They will describe, extend, and create number patterns using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will learn the rules behind these patterns and use them to complete number sentences. They will discover how operations are connected, using inverse relationships and properties like commutativity and associativity. By recognizing and applying these patterns, students will build strong reasoning skills and confidence with numbers.
NUMBER OPERATIONS
In this unit, students will build fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will explore how operations connect and can be shown in different ways. Students will use mental strategies to solve problems when working with facts to 20, use a range of strategies to add and subtract bigger numbers, and conceptually explore multiplication and division. They will double, halve and skip count to solve problems and model equations. Through word problems and hands-on practice, students will develop confidence and flexibility with number operations.
