WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME

Students will explore why people move from one place to another and how migration shapes lives and societies. They will investigate different forms of migration and the challenges migrants face. Through concepts like form, change, and causation, students will understand what drives human movement and how it affects both individuals and communities. They will build research and communication skills while developing empathy and open-mindedness. This unit encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of our shared human journey.

LET'S GET PERSONAL continued...

Students will explore personal narratives, journals, and diaries to understand how writers share meaningful experiences. They will learn how structure, voice, and word choice evoke emotion and create vivid imagery. By connecting personal memories to universal themes, students will craft stories that reflect identity, relationships, and change. They will revise with purpose, use figurative language effectively, and express ideas clearly. This unit builds empathy, self-awareness, and the power of personal storytelling.

NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE continued...

Students will explore how the base 10 system extends infinitely in both directions into large numbers and decimals. They will build strong number sense, understand place value deeply, and connect it to real-life contexts. They will compare, estimate, round, and order numbers, including negative integers. Students will model exponents, explore square roots, and identify patterns like prime numbers. This inquiry will grow their reasoning, problem-solving, and mental math skills, encouraging flexible thinking and mathematical confidence.

DATA HANDLING

Students will explore how to collect, organize, and interpret data to make informed decisions. They will learn to use graphs, charts, and databases to display information clearly. Through inquiry, students will understand key statistics like mean, median, mode, and range. They will investigate probability by comparing experimental and theoretical outcomes and express it using fractions, decimals, and percentages. This unit develops skills in analyzing data, conducting experiments, and communicating findings confidently and accurately.

LIVES, JOURNEYS AND CHANGE

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through meaningful connections with the Year 6 Where We Are in Place and Time Unit of Inquiry. Using migration, personal journeys, challenges, opportunities, identity, and belonging as contexts, students will read, discuss, interpret, and create biographical texts that help them access and communicate their UOI learning. They will identify key life events and achievements, sequence information chronologically, interpret timelines, maps, images, and captions, and explain how important events can shape a person’s life and impact. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop greater fluency and comprehension when reading biographies, organise information into clear paragraphs, use temporal connectors accurately, and write increasingly coherent biographical texts. They will also strengthen grammar, including prefixes and suffixes, sentence expansion and reduction, and noun forms, while planning, revising, and refining their writing for clarity, accuracy, organisation, purpose, and audience.

MOVEMENT ACROSS CULTURES

Students will develop their skills through Traditional Games, Dance, and the Olympics, with a focus on cultural identity, diversity, movement, cooperation, respect, and global connections. Integrated with the Year 6 Where We Are in Place and Time Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how the movement of people can influence the ways games, sports, and dances are shared and adapted across cultures. Through Traditional Games, they will experience games from different regions and consider how cultural practices travel with people. In Dance, students will use movement to explore identity, stories, and cultural expression. Through the Olympics, they will consider how sport brings people from different countries and cultures together. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will combine cultural movements into performances, use movement to express personal or cultural identity, and collaborate to create performances that bring together different global styles.
