EARLY YEARS 4 | UNIT 2
UNIT OF INQUIRY
SHARING THE PLANET
Through hands-on experiences with plants, animals, and the natural environment, children will investigate what living things need to survive—such as food, water, air, and care. They will observe changes over time, ask questions, and begin to understand the difference between living and non-living things. This unit nurtures curiosity and care for the natural world while encouraging children to make connections between their own needs and those of other living things.
SYMBOLIC EXPLORATION & EXPRESSION IN LITERACY
ON-GOING UNIT
Students will explore language, symbols, and stories through play, talk, and creativity. They will engage in rich conversations, enjoy songs and rhymes, and notice sounds and patterns in words. They will experiment with drawing, mark-making, and writing for real purposes, including their own names. They will use art, role play, and dramatic play to share ideas and feelings. They will enjoy books, ask questions, retell stories, and connect print with meaning, building strong foundations for literacy.
SYMBOLIC EXPLORATION & EXPRESSION IN NUMERACY
ON-GOING UNIT
Students will understand that numbers, shapes, patterns, and symbols help us make sense of the world. They will use mathematical language to describe ideas, solve problems, and explain their thinking. They will explore symbols, marks, and materials to represent quantities, patterns, and relationships. They will enjoy stories, songs, and play as opportunities for rich numeracy learning. Through inquiry, real-life experiences, and collaborative conversations, they will connect mathematics to their lives, express ideas in many ways, and build joyful confidence in numeracy.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GROWING THROUGH MOVEMENT
Students will develop their physical skills through Athletics and Aquatics, with a focus on movement, growth, healthy choices, water confidence, and safety. Integrated with the EY4 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, children will explore how people and animals move in different ways and make connections to how living things grow and change over time. They will notice how practice helps their own bodies become stronger and more confident and begin to understand that caring for themselves and their environment supports healthy growth. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, children will practise running at different speeds, jumping in different ways, throwing objects using underarm and overarm actions, developing confidence and movement skills in water, and following simple safety routines.
EXPRESSIVE ARTS
ART IN MOTION: EXPLORING MOVEMENT, MUSIC, AND MAKE-BELIEVE
Students explore how movement and the arts can help us express ourselves and tell stories. They respond to music, stories and images through movement, sound and materials, using their bodies, voices and instruments to create and vary sound. Through imaginative play, they experiment with different ways of moving, making and expressing ideas and feelings.
Students respond to movement, sound and images through actions and personal connections, noticing differences in how creative work can look and sound. They develop awareness of their bodies and the space around them as they move together, share ideas and appreciate different forms of creative expression.
Creating:
Creates with others, contributing to shared ideas.
Develops and shapes artistic ideas using different elements of the arts.
Responding:
